بَصمةُ سورةِ الفاتحةAl-Fatiha’s lexical signatureL’empreinte lexicale d’Al-Fatiha
Mercy and the path: words that return within seven verses
Al-Fatiha has only seven verses, yet two expressions return clearly within it: “al-Raḥmān al-Raḥīm” in the basmala and again after “Rabb al-ʿālamīn” (1:1, 1:3), and “al-ṣirāṭ”, the path, in the request for guidance and then in the description of the path sought (1:6, 1:7). These repetitions offer a starting point for this reading, without reducing the surah to them.
“Al-Raḥmān al-Raḥīm” twice
The expression occurs twice, giving four words from the root r-ḥ-m. That distinction matters: four words from one root, but two occurrences of the phrase. It opens the surah and returns in the praise of Allah before “Mālik yawm al-dīn” (1:4). Reading the pattern means looking at where the words return and what surrounds them, as well as counting them.
Asking for the path, then describing it
“Ihdinā al-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm” (1:6) makes the request. The next verse repeats the word in “ṣirāṭ alladhīna anʿamta ʿalayhim” (1:7), identifying the path being sought. This is not the repetition of a whole sentence: the repeated word connects the request to its explanation. It follows “Iyyāka naʿbudu wa-iyyāka nastaʿīn” (1:5), within a passage of worship, seeking help and asking for guidance.
“Iyyāka” occurs twice, as does “ʿalayhim”. The tool does not include these forms in its root counts, but they remain part of the text’s structure. The tables capture some relationships, not all of them.
The cadence of the verse endings
All seven verses end with nūn or mīm preceded by yāʾ: al-raḥīm, al-ʿālamīn, al-raḥīm, al-dīn, nastaʿīn, al-mustaqīm, al-ḍāllīn. This audible pattern belongs alongside the repeated vocabulary. Cadence alone, however, does not establish a meaning.
What the count establishes
The classification used here counts 23 root-bearing words across 18 roots. In such a short surah, unusually frequent roots point to passages worth examining; they do not prove a theme or an intention.
The “first appearance” table records all these roots as appearing here first in the order of the mushaf. That follows directly from al-Fatiha’s position as its first surah. It is not a distinctive linguistic feature. The order of occurrence alone does not show that al-Fatiha creates these roots’ meanings or determines their use throughout the Qur’an. Understanding them requires examining letter meanings, word formation and contexts of use.
