Commentary
Night in Arabic is not merely the absence of day. It is an entity that stands on its own. You say that you went into the night, as though you had gone into a house. And night is pluralized as layālin: every single night is an entity with its own edges, not merely a stretch that separates. And the oath here is by this entity that holds whatever is inside it.
And in the Book the oath by the night recurs in more than one place: "and by the night when it travels," "and by the night when it turns away," "and by the night when it settles into stillness." Each wording catches one angle of its act: the travelling, the withdrawing, the stilling. And here, in this Surah, it is the act of covering that is caught: the night as a vessel coming down upon what lies beneath it and taking it in.
Idhā is an adverb of time that names what happens, and it comes here with the imperfect verb. The wording is "when it envelops," not "when it enveloped": an imperfect verb that calls up a renewing state. It is as though the oath were not upon one particular night that has passed, but upon every night that comes and covers what lies beneath it.
And the root gh-sh-w is, letter by letter, a covering that spreads until it takes everything in. The ghishāwa over an eye is what comes down upon it and veils it. The ghashy is the coming down of a swoon upon someone conscious. And the night in the verse does exactly this: it comes down upon everything visible and veils its details. It does not cancel them; it hides them. And this is why it is well chosen as an oath that paves the way for the verse that follows: "and by the day when it shines forth in full clarity." The night veils and the day uncovers, and existence runs between the two.
And in the choice of the imperfect after the adverb there is a further alerting. Had it been said "and by the dark night," the verse would have spoken of a settled attribute. But it said "when it envelops," and so set the night into a motion that renews. The cosmos is not a fixed scene but a work that keeps being done. And an oath upon what renews drags the listener into his own moment: the night that is enveloping you now, not a night in some distant book.
The wāw of the oath opens the Surah with the night in its act of covering. The root l-y-l is a vessel that folds around what lies beneath it and holds it. And the verb "envelops," from the root gh-sh-w, is a covering that spreads over a surface until it takes everything in, like the film over an eye and the swoon over someone conscious. The imperfect after idhā makes the act renew with every night that comes. The night is not a stretch of time that has ended but an entity that acts, and it calls the reader to see that whatever is going to be said about human striving runs inside a cosmos that itself embodies the meaning of the two sides.
Commentaire
«وَاللَّيلِ إذا يَغشى» = «By the night as it conceals» أو «By the night when it covers».
Two Readings
Common reading
"By the night as it conceals" or "By the night when it covers." The verse is read as a general oath honoring the night and its phenomena, with yaghshā understood as general darkening.
A reading that honors the night without binding the oath to the Surah's two-part structure.
A root-reading
Al-layl (root l-y-l) is not the mere absence of day but the frame that holds everything inside it. Yaghshā (root gh-sh-w) names a covering that spreads to take in everything: the film over the eye, the swoon over the conscious, the cloth over the sleeper. The particle idhā with the imperfect names a renewing condition: each night, as it falls on each reader. The oath is therefore not on the night as a thing but on the night in its act of veiling. And the next verse takes the opposite pole: "and by the day when it unveils." The cosmos runs in pairs, and the Surah summons that pairing as witness to what it will say about diverse human strivings.
A reading that hears the oath as an argument from cosmic alternation, not a generic veneration.
The two readings do not conflict. The first preserves the honor done to the night; the second binds the witness to the architecture of the Surah. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
The law of diverse striving: "your endeavors are diverse"
The three oaths converge into a single answer: "truly your endeavors are diverse" (92:4). Shattā in Arabic is the opposite of jamʿ, gathering: what has been scattered into separate directions. The language is emphatic: there is no single striving. The striving itself splits, just as night splits from day and male from female.
And the law the Surah extracts is binary: "so he who gives and is mindful, and affirms the most-beautiful, We will ease him toward ease"; then "and he who is miserly and self-sufficient, and denies the most-beautiful, We will ease him toward hardship". Yusrā and ʿusrā, two poles, like night and day. The human is eased toward one or the other by what he chooses. The cosmos works by pairs, and the human likewise runs in one of two pairs.
"Al-Ḥusnā" in the Qur'an: the word that is affirmed or denied
"Al-ḥusnā" in verses 6 and 9 is the hinge. "And affirmed the most-beautiful" against "and denied the most-beautiful". Al-ḥusnā in the Qur'an is a particular word for God's promise of the most-beautiful recompense. In Yūnus: "for those who do beautifully is the most-beautiful, and more" (10:26); in al-Raḥmān: "is the requital of beauty anything but beauty?" (55:60).
The rule: affirming al-ḥusnā is not affirming an idea but a law: what you do comes back to you. The one who gave and affirmed that giving would come back was eased toward ease. The one who hoarded and denied that hoarding would come back was eased toward hardship. The Surah does not threaten; it discloses. The cosmos itself eases each one toward what he chose. This is a law of night-and-day: what you plant in the night is uncovered in the day.
Al-Layl and al-Ḍuḥā: the triad of 91-92-93
The Surahs of the Sun, the Night, and the Forenoon form a consecutive triad, each opening with an oath that pairs day and night. "By the sun and her forenoon, by the moon when it follows her, by the day when it unveils her, by the night when it covers her"; then "by the night when it covers, and by the day when it grows bright"; then "by the forenoon, and by the night when it stills".
Notice: yaghshā (covers) recurs across al-Shams and al-Layl, and tajallā (grows bright) recurs across al-Shams, al-Layl, and al-Ḍuḥā. The Qur'an weaves three Surahs on a single subject: alternation as cosmic, alternation as inner, alternation as conduct. Three Surahs in one breath. Al-Shams brings alternation down onto the soul (purification vs. burial); al-Layl brings it onto striving (ease vs. hardship); al-Ḍuḥā brings it onto the addressee himself ("your Lord has not forsaken you, the next is better for you than the first"). The same law, three faces.
