﴾ And We created for them the like of it, in which they ride. ﴿
After the laden ship He generalized the blessing: "And We created for them the like of it." The pronoun in "its like" returns to the ship already mentioned; that is, He created for them, of its form and kind, what carries them in the same way. Mithl (root m-th-l) is the counterpart that resembles another in attribute and function. So the blessing went beyond the first ship and extended to likes of it that run the same course. The words "We created" attribute this making to Allah even if it came about by people's hands as a craft: the material is His creation and the subjection His subjecting, so it was ascribed to Him as a creating.
"In which they ride": rukūb (root r-k-b) is the mounting upon the back of what carries, and the settling upon it in order to be borne. So what is created "of its like" is what they mount and what carries them. The indefiniteness of "what" widens the reference to every ridden thing Allah subjected for their conveyance; He did not confine it to a single form and left it open to embrace whatever bore them upon its surface. So the meaning is: as We carried their offspring in the laden ship, We created for them of its kind what they mount and what bears them, and the blessing of subjection is scattered through all that carries.
