Commentary
"They said, 'Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what she is; indeed, cows look alike to us, and we, God willing, shall be guided.'"
A third request, and a third way of delaying. This time the excuse changes in kind: inna l-baqara tashābaha ʿalaynā, "the cows look alike to us." The move is subtle. Rather than confess an inner resistance, they project the difficulty onto the things themselves: it is no longer we who tarry, it is the cows that are too alike. The root sh-b-h says exactly this, faces that blend until the distinction is lost. The form tashābaha (reflexive) adds a detail: they resemble one another; the verb is set on the side of the objects, not of the subject. One could have said ishtabaha ʿalaynā ("it was made confused to us"), which would lay the uncertainty on the seeing eye; they said tashābaha ʿalaynā, which places it on the cows themselves.
The preposition ʿalaynā ("upon us") adds a further shade: not merely "for us," but with a weight upon us. The resemblance is presented as a burden undergone, as though the confused object were smothering discernment. Everything is arranged so as to avoid the one phrase that would have been true: naḥnu qaṣṣarnā, "it is we who fell short."
Then comes the first shadow of an admission: wa-innā in shāʾa llāhu la-muhtadūn, "and, if God wills, we shall be guided." Here in shāʾa Allāh is, for the first time in this sequence, a recognition of a will above their own, without which nothing is done. It is a first admission of lack: they are no longer presented as autonomous actors; there is an "if." Yet the verse does not leave this in shāʾa Allāh standing clear, it leaves it wrapped in the emphasis la-muhtadūn ("we shall be well guided"), a reinforced form that betrays a pride not yet put out. They confess their need, then cover it at once with a promise cast into the future, a promise that seeks to keep the image intact.
The movement has a fine psychological precision. When one procrastinates, one displaces the cause ("the things are confusing"), then promises the future ("we shall do it when…"), fitting the promise with a reverent formula ("God willing"), so as to pass off, under the cover of piety, the continuation of the delay. The sentence spoken at the surface is correct; the inner motion, meanwhile, goes on with its flight.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: tashābaha ʿalaynā is not a plain uncertainty, it is a transfer of cause onto the things, a way of exempting oneself; in shāʾa Allāh is a recognition of need that may be sincere but may also serve as a lid over a prolonged procrastination; la-muhtadūn keeps a tone of assurance that does not square with the admission just made, and whose very force betrays the resistance within.
Commentaire
Common reading
They repeated the request, claiming the cows looked alike and saying they would be guided God willing.
A root-reading
Tashābaha = faces merged so nothing is distinguished (ش+ب+ه). Muhtadūn = walkers on a clear way (ه+د+ي). In shā'a Allāh is the first admission of need.
Note: "the cows look alike" shifts responsibility from the self to the objects. They did not say "we failed to see" but "things became alike to us".
Lecture courante

🔬 Reflection
"God willing" in the Qur'an: the sincere person's mooring and the procrastinator's screen
Their "and we, God willing, shall be guided" is the first time in the story they admit a will above their own. The surface phrasing is reverent; but its placement in the sequence discloses something else. Let us see how the Book itself uses this phrase elsewhere, so we can tell the sincere one from the masking one.
In al-Kahf the command is given: "and do not say of any thing: 'I will do that tomorrow,' unless God wills" (18:23-24): the formula is mandated before every future intention. Joseph at his story's close: "enter Egypt, God willing, in safety" (12:99): it does not postpone but assures. Ishmael at the moment of sacrifice: "you will find me, God willing, among the patient" (37:102): a turning toward help at the moment of submission. Moses with Shuʿayb: "you will find me, God willing, among the righteous" (28:27): a turning toward help before the commitment.
The extracted rule: in shāʾa Allāh in the Book attaches to an intention to act, not to a delay. It accompanies "enter," "you will find me," verbs open to execution. In al-Baqara, however, it accompanies "we shall be guided": a participle naming a state they claim, not a verb they execute. And notice the la- emphasis prefacing muhtadūn: an assertion rising over the admission it just followed. The sincere one says "God willing, I will do"; the procrastinator says "God willing, we are already guided": presenting a picture of himself and then covering it with the divine will. The same wording can be a mooring for the sincere and a curtain for the resistant; the difference is the verb that comes after.
"Tashābaha" in the Qur'an: whose hearts are alike see the things alike
Their "truly the cows have become alike to us" casts the confusion onto the cows themselves: we did not find one, because the cows look the same. But the Qur'an comments on this pattern elsewhere in the very same surah, with a phrase that turns the gaze inward: "and those who do not know say, 'why does God not speak to us, or a sign come to us?' Thus did those before them say, the like of their saying, their hearts are alike" (2:118). The likeness of things in the seeing may be an echo of the likeness of the heart. When hearts have become alike in their resistance, things become alike in their sight, and every detail becomes a pretext for a new question.
Tracing the root through the Qur'an reveals three locations: (1) blamed likeness in the hearts: "their hearts are alike" (2:118). (2) cautionary likeness in certain verses of the Book, which the deviant chase: "as for those in whose hearts is deviation, they follow the part of it that is allegorical" (3:7). (3) praised likeness: the inner coherence of the entire Book, "a Book whose parts resemble one another, repeated" (39:23). The likeness is not bad in itself; the posture toward it is what is judged. And Banū Isrāʾīl in this verse mirror 2:118 in miniature: their hearts had become alike in refusing the command, and so the cows became alike to their sight. The word in the Qur'an precedes the term: tashābaha in the heart may be reflected outward in the seen things, and the eye may see what the heart inclines toward.
