Commentary
The verse returns to the act of sending down: "He is the One who sent the Book down upon you." It then says minhu, "from it," and so places the two classes that follow inside the Book itself: the signs made firm are from it, and the resembling signs are from it. Neither may be pushed outside for the sake of the other, because the particle min has brought them both into one source, and a difference of shape does not cut the unity of the sending down.
The word āyāt, "signs," keeps the work of both classes a work of pointing: the made-firm sign is a mark, and the resembling sign is a mark. The difference lies between two ways of pointing, not between speech that points and speech that does not. A road may have firm edges, and its landmarks may come to resemble one another, yet the one walking it still stands before signs.
Muḥkamāt, from ḥ-k-m, is a containment that tightens upon what is inside it, holds it, and then gathers its parts. A sign made firm is one whose boundaries have been closed so that its parts do not slip loose, rather than merely one that is easy to read. The plural form establishes that this firmness stands in several signs, not in one sentence made to carry the whole Book.
The pronoun hunna then arrives, cutting the sentence in two and fixing it: "they are the mother of the Book." A mother is a place of gathering and of return, to which what has scattered is carried back and out of which what has grown comes. The verse says that the made-firm signs are the mother of the Book, not that they are the whole Book. A reference carries what is brought back to it and holds its connection steady, and does not cancel it.
The others are mutashābihāt, from sh-b-h, in a form that makes the resembling mutual: things that resemble one another. The root carries a spread whose edges stay connected while the boundaries of separation grow faint within it. The one looking therefore needs an unhurried eye, so as not to take one image in the place of another. Resemblance means that the boundary does not offer itself at the first glance; it does not mean falsity.
Before that word stands "others," so resemblance does not swallow the whole Book: there is a made-firm mother, and there are others that resemble. The joining particle gathers them both, and the description given to each class keeps it from being mixed with the other; the Book does not ask its reader to turn all its doors into one door.
The verse then moves from the shape of the signs to a place within the reader: "in their hearts is a tilt." It puts the tilt in the hearts, and does not say that resemblance is the tilt. The root z-y-gh carries a piercing current that extends and then sinks inward, a leaning that leaves the channel while it is still moving. So the cause is a heart with a leaning inside it, not the existence of a resembling sign.
The answer follows: "they follow what resembles within it." The connecting fāʾ joins the following to the tilt, and "what resembles" makes the choice deliberate, aimed at the class in which the boundaries grow faint. The verse then states the seeking twice: "seeking trial and seeking its unfolding." The purpose is spoken within the sentence itself, ascribed to those whose hearts hold the tilt, and read off the word "seeking" when it comes a second time.
Fitna, from f-t-n, is a splitting that cuts and then lets what is inside come out to view. To seek it is to seek an opening that brings the hidden into the open, but here that seeking is tied to the tilt of the heart and to following the resembling sign. Taʾwīl, from ʾ-w-l, carries the return of a thing, after it has stretched out, to what it ends at and hangs upon. The repetition of "seeking" keeps the two pursuits from melting into one.
Then comes the boundary: "No one knows its unfolding but Allah." The pause mark in the text makes that sentence complete before "those deeply rooted in knowledge." The deeply rooted are defined here by what they say, not by owning the unfolding: "We trust it; all is from our Rabb." Rootedness, from r-s-kh, is a holding fast in a narrow channel that drives down into the depth. The rooted knower stands firm before the resembling sign and returns it to the unity of its source, and does not tear it out of the Book.
The verse closes with a second denial and exception: "None takes the reminder except those possessed of kernels." The kernel is the inside that remains once the husk is stripped away, and the plural came to describe those who do not stop at the resemblance of the surface. Taking the reminder is the return of what was heard to its inward place, not the gathering of new information. Whoever holds a kernel neither flees the resembling sign nor turns it into a ladder for a leaning of their own.
In the Book are signs made firm until they became a mother that is returned to, and signs that came to resemble one another until they asked for a kernel that does not snatch them away. The decisive split runs between a heart with a tilt in it, which follows what resembles, seeking what the verse itself named, and a knowledge that took root and says, "all is from our Rabb"; it does not run between a reader who owns the obscure and a reader who is ignorant of it. The made-firm sign is a mother, not a weapon, and the resembling sign is a child of the Book, not a stranger to it. When the kernel holds, the resemblance is not lost and the reference is not swallowed.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is commonly read as dividing the Book into clear, decisive verses that form its foundation and other verses whose surface can bear resembling possibilities. The pause may be placed after "except Allah," reserving knowledge of the interpretation to Him, or the conjunction may be continued so that those rooted in knowledge share in knowing it, while affirming that all is from Allah.
A reading that presents the two classes of verses and the place of pause as the key to differing understandings of interpretation.
A root-reading
Muḥkamāt (root ḥ-k-m) are signs whose boundaries are secured, becoming a mother to which things return. Mutashābihāt (root sh-b-h) are signs whose forms connect while their boundaries grow faint. The tilt belongs in the heart, not to the resembling sign. Deep rootedness is a firm penetration into knowledge, made visible in the words, "We trust it; all is from our Rabb." The verse describes the ethics of reading as much as kinds of text.
A reading that moves the question from possessing the obscure to the heart's steadiness before both classes of the Book.
The two readings do not conflict. The first clarifies the division and the place of pause; the second listens to the shapes of firmness, resemblance, tilt, and rootedness. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Iḥkām, from ḥ k m, is a containment in a narrow channel that holds what is inside it and then gathers its parts: a made-firm sign is one whose edges have been closed so that nothing works loose. Tashābuh, from sh b h, is a spread whose extremities stay connected while the dividing edge between them grows faint: a resembling sign is not one whose meaning is hidden, but one whose border is. Zaygh, from z y gh, is a penetrating current that sinks into the interior, a tilt moving in the heart before it shows in a choice. Rusūkh, from r s kh, is a grip in a narrow channel that drives inward and does not float. And the lubb, from l b b, is an outer boundary attached to an inner core that holds together. So the verse joins a property of the text to a property of the reader in one sentence: a faint border there, a tilt or a rootedness here.
Second: the scene
One Book carrying two textures: a made-firm mother to which things return, and others whose edges resemble one another. Then the gaze moves from the page to the chest: "as for those in whose hearts is a tilt." The tilt comes first and the following comes after; it is the heart that chooses which of the two textures it will settle into. On the other side, the deeply rooted are not defined by having secured the final destination of the meaning, but by what they say: "we trust it, all is from our Rabb." The faint border is not a gap in the Book. It is the place where the reader is exposed.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
This structure recurs in every body of text that a community reasons from: passages whose edges are firm and on which the community agrees, and margins where the images resemble one another. Factions do not form at the made-firm mother; they form at the faint borders, because a tilt finds room only where the edges dim. That is why the question "what is in the heart" precedes the question "what is in the text": whoever arrives with a tilt selects what suits it and calls the selection evidence, while whoever arrives with a settled core returns the resembling passage to its mother instead of tearing it out of the Book. The difference between the two doors is not the quantity of what is known, but the single source to which all of it is referred.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The verse's ordering, which places the tilt in the heart before the selection of the resembling passage, may parallel what cognitive psychologists study under the name motivated reasoning: a prior leaning selects from the available evidence whatever suits it, so that the choice looks like the result of inquiry when it is in fact the result of an inclination. What arrests the reader here is that the verse does not locate the fault in the presence of resembling passages in the Book; it locates it in a place inside the recipient. That ordering is precisely what the field insists upon.
The description of a "mother of the Book" may also meet what students of large textual systems call a stable core and a contested margin: a body no one among its people disputes, and edges at which schools arise and interpretations multiply. It is observable in the histories of such systems that a community which keeps the margin tied to the core stays one, while a community that tears the margin out, or seats it where the core should sit, splinters. The verse offers its remedy in the form of an utterance rather than a procedure: "all is from our Rabb," that is, referring both textures back to a single source.
And the closing mention of "those possessed of kernels" may touch what is called metacognition: that a recipient knows the limit of what he knows, and so does not mistake a border faint to him for a border faint in the text itself. The lubb, at its root, is what remains once the husk is stripped; whoever has a kernel knows which part of his perception is husk and which part is a door he can stand on. This is a possible parallel in describing the recipient, not a claim that the verse settles a theory of cognition.
