﴾ It is the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them, they do not give trust. ﴿
"The same" (sawāʾ, root s-w-y) denotes an evenness between two things such that neither one outweighs the other. The two made even here are "whether you warn them" and "or do not warn them." For these, warning and its absence stand at one level in result because the place it falls upon has been encircled by the barriers and the shackles the previous verses described, not because warning is without effect in itself. So the evenness describes the state of the closed-off recipient; it is not a judgment upon the act of warning.
The sentence does not command abandoning the warning; it describes the fruit of the warning in this persistent kind: "they do not give trust." Immediately after it comes the one in whom warning does avail, "You can only warn whoever follows the reminder." The two verses separate the one who closed himself off, for whom the two are even, from the one whose sight remained open, whom reminder benefits. In this there is a relief for the one sent: their not believing is caused by their own closure, not by any falling short of his.
"The same" (s-w-y) is an evenness between two things in which neither outweighs the other, and the two made even here are the warning and its absence. That the two stand level for these in result comes from the place having been encircled by the barriers and the shackles that came before, not from warning being futile in itself, so the evenness is a description of the closed-off recipient. "They do not give trust" is the result of that closure. The verse separates this kind from the one whose mention comes after it, "whoever follows the reminder," and in it lies a relief for the one sent: their not believing comes from their own persistence, not from any falling short of his.
