﴾ We have set before them a barrier and behind them a barrier, and covered them over, so they do not see. ﴿
A sadd (root s-d-d) is a firm barrier that fills the gap and prevents passage. Setting one "before them," ahead of them, and one "behind them," at their backs, completes the enclosure begun in the previous verse: there a collar lifts the head and forbids looking below and ahead, while here two barriers veil the front and the back. So the path that lies before them is not seen, and the trace behind them is not heeded. Persistence builds walls that shut its owner in between what he does not see coming and what he draws no lesson from in the past.
"And covered them over" (aghshaynāhum, root gh-sh-y) is to cover them with what hides sight, like a film over the eye. After the two encircling barriers comes a covering that completes the veiling from above. The fā is sequence: a barrier ahead and behind, then a covering that overspreads. Its result is "so they do not see": they do not see with insight what they are guided to, because the instrument of sight has been veiled by the turning-away they piled up, not because the seen is absent. The sight here is the sight of the heart; the standing path is present, and the blindness is the seer's.
The verse completes the picture of the enclosure that the shackles began. A sadd (s-d-d) is a firm barrier that fills the gap and prevents passage, and setting one before them and one behind them shuts them in between what they do not see coming and what they draw no lesson from in the past. Then "and covered them over" (gh-sh-y) is a covering that hides sight from above, so the enclosure is completed from every side. The result is "so they do not see": a blindness of insight, not an absence of the seen, for the standing ṣirāṭ (verse 4) is present and the veiling is in the seer. All of it comes in the form "We have set," which describes a state that followed upon the persistence named in "the word came true upon them," not a fetter laid down before their choosing.
