﴾ Have they not seen that We created for them, of what Our hands wrought, livestock, so they are owners of them? ﴿
"Have they not seen" is a question of affirmation that rouses them to look at what lies before them. In "that We created for them" the lām expresses specification: this creation is directed to their benefit. "Of what Our hands wrought" is an expression that ascribes the making to Him alone, an ascription affirming that He is singular in it, with no partner making it alongside Him. Anʿām (root n-ʿ-m) are the herds, so called for the blessing (niʿma) and the softness in them. The One who created these herds by His hand alone is the very One besides whom they take as gods beings that create nothing (verse 74). The affirmation thus prepares for the rebuke: how can the bestowing Creator be abandoned in favour of one incapable who makes nothing?
"So they are owners of them": the fā sets the ownership upon the creation. Milk (root m-l-k) is the power to dispose of a thing and to hold it. He created the herds for them and, in addition, gave them their ownership and disposal, to hold and manage them. It is striking that their ownership branches from Allah's creating: they are owners by a grant, not by origination. True ownership, then, belongs to the One who created, and their figurative ownership is a gift from Him. The verse carries a subtle reminder that the One who gave them ownership is able to strip it from them, and the owner should not be deceived by an ownership that was granted and returns to its Creator.
