﴾ When they were sitting over it. ﴿
Idh brings the reader into a time marked out: the verse lays its finger on one moment, when they are sitting over it, rather than saying that this was their condition in a general way. The oath before it had opened the place and the time, and this particle holds the scene at a burning point.
In that holding there is a deliberate hardness. The verse does not hurry toward what they did; it first shows the reader the posture of their bodies, seated and settled, as though the fire were a sitting place and the trench a place of residence.
Quʿūd is from q-ʿ-d, literally a coming down to a resting place where the body holds. One who stands may still start up or flee, while one who has sat down has settled. So the word carries, along with a position of the body, the posture of a soul that has grown used to its place.
The verse said "sitting" where it might have said "standing" or "passing by." This pulls the scene out of the instant of an explosion and sets it inside the image of a stay, and the act the next verse will name is ringed about with sitting instead of breaking out in disorder.
This verse fixes the scene in a single moment by the particle idh: they are there, over the fire, sitting. Al-quʿūd, from q-ʿ-d, is a coming down to a place where the body settles, a stay that has made the fire its sitting place rather than a chance passing or a watchful standing. The pronoun in "over it" refers back to the fire, holder of fuel, of the previous verse, so the distance is nil: they are upon it, leaning over it. The harshest thing in the verse is the stillness around the fire, not the fire alone; standing is the posture of one who might flee or start up, whereas the one who sits has accepted the place. The verse does not yet hurry to name the act and sets out the body first: this is how they sit, this is how they settle on the edge of the burning. What the next verse will tell of the act done to those who had entered trust is an act ringed about with sitting, and no first stirring of disorder.
﴾ Quand ils étaient assis au-dessus d'elle. ﴿
