﴾ Has man not seen that We created him from a drop, and at once he is a manifest disputant? ﴿
"Has man not seen" is a declarative question that refers him to the consideration of his own self. Al-insān (root ʾ-n-s) is the noun of the kind, and it embraces everyone from whom this denial comes. "That We created him from a drop" is a reminder of the root of his creation. Nuṭfa (root n-ṭ-f) is the small quantity of water that drips and trickles, the least that water can be. So the human being began from a contemptible drop with no substance and was then fashioned into a creation. His paltry origin was set before him to confront him with the denial he came to: it does not befit whoever had this origin to dispute with his Creator.
"And at once he is a manifest disputant": the "at once" expresses suddenness and brings out the paradox between the beginning and the end. Khaṣīm (root kh-ṣ-m) denotes the intensely contentious in dispute, and mubīn the manifestly, overtly contentious. So the one created from a drop came to dispute the power of his Creator over his return, arguing and quarrelling. The paradox is glaring: the weakness of the origin (a drop) meets the insolence of the end (a manifest disputant). How, then, does whoever was incapable of being anything until he was created overreach in contention against the One who created him? This paves the way for the next verse, in which he struck a likeness and forgot his creation (verse 78), so the forgetting of the origin is what bred the contention.
