Commentary
"And he struck a likeness for Us and forgot his own creation" presents an argument that rests on the forgetting of the origin. Ḍarb al-mathal (root m-th-l) is the bringing forward of a counterpart by which one argues, so he brought what he reckoned a proof that the rising is impossible. In "And forgot his own creation", nisyān (root n-s-y) is the departure of a thing from the mind after it had been present there. Here lies the flaw: he drove the likeness forward and overlooked that he himself had been created from nothing. Had he remembered his beginning, a drop and then a human being (verse 77), he would have known that the One who brought him into being out of nothing returns him more easily. His argument is built on a forgetting, and had the forgotten thing been present, the argument would have fallen from its foundation.
The text of his likeness then follows, a deeming-far that halts at the surface of the perishing: "He said: Who will give life to the bones when they are decayed?" The ʿiẓām are what remains of the body's frame after its flesh has perished, and ramīm (root r-m-m) is the worn, the crumbled, the scattered, from ramma, said of a bone that has worn away and fallen to pieces. So he deemed it far that life should return to a bone worn away and crumbled. His question "Who" is a denying one: he sees none with power over that. His error lies in stopping at the surface of the perishing without piercing to the One behind it; he measured the power of the Creator by the incapacity of the creature and judged a thing impossible because he himself is incapable of it. The answer comes to him in the following verse, in words that undo his analogy: "The One who brought them forth the first time will give them life" (verse 79).
"And he struck a likeness for Us" (m-th-l, the bringing forward of a counterpart by which one argues): he brought what he reckoned a proof that the rising is impossible. "And forgot his own creation" (n-s-y) marks the site of the flaw, for he overlooked that he was created from nothing; had he remembered his beginning (a drop, verse 77), he would have known that the One who brought him forth out of nothing returns him more easily. The text of his likeness follows: "Who will give life to the bones when they are decayed?" (r-m-m, the worn and crumbled). He deemed far the return of life to a worn bone, and his question is a denying one. His error was to measure the power of the Creator by the incapacity of the creature, judging a thing impossible for his own incapacity. The answer undoes his analogy: "The One who brought them forth the first time will give them life" (verse 79).
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as a statement of the argument of the rising's denier: he brought a worn bone and crumbled it saying who will give life to this?, forgetting that Allah created him the first time from nothing.
A root-reading
"He struck a likeness" (m-th-l) is he brought a counterpart argued by, "and forgot his creation" (n-s-y) overlooked his origin: the site of the flaw. And "decayed" (r-m-m) is the worn, crumbled. His error is measuring the Creator's power by his own incapacity, so he judged impossibility for his own incapacity.
A reading that hears in "forgot his creation" the site of his argument's collapse: forgetting the origin.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Reflection
The text discloses the site of the flaw in the denier's argument with a single phrase: "and forgot his own creation." For the man did not lack a proof to be set up, but forgot the proof he carries in his own body. He brought a worn bone, crumbling it with his hand and saying: who will give life to this?, and it escaped him that he himself was a drop with no bone in it and no form, then was fashioned upright. So the one who disputes the reviving of the worn bone forgot that his beginning was slighter than the bone: a drop with no substance. So forgetting, not the scarcity of proof, is what made the denial.
In the verse is a lesson in the method of reasoning: the denier measured the Creator's power by his own. He saw himself incapable of reviving the bone, so he supposed incapacity an attribute clinging to every doer. And this is an overturning of the scale: the creature measures his Creator by himself, so judges what is beyond his power to be impossible in itself. The truth is that the incapacity of one does not indicate the incapacity of another, so how of the One who created power itself? So the error is not in the question "Who will give life to the bones?" but in that he asked it denying, not inquiring, and so shut the door of the answer before seeking it.
The most eloquent thing in the scene is that the answer was in the questioner's own hand, not outside it: the body by which he disputes is a proof of what he denies. For every human carries in his make the proof of his rising: whoever became from a drop a human can become from a decayed thing a human. So the reflection is that a person read his own self before disputing about another: the denier needs no new sign, but to remember a sign he walks with. So forgetting the origin is the door of every denial, and remembering it the door of every certainty.
