﴾ So let not their speech grieve you. Indeed We know what they conceal and what they declare. ﴿
"So let not their speech grieve you": the fā arranges the consolation upon what preceded, the disclosure of their gods' incapacity (verse 75). Ḥuzn (root ḥ-z-n) is the thickness and roughness of grief that comes over the heart; the word is from ḥazn, the rugged ground of the earth. The conveyer is forbidden to let this roughness enter his heart from their speech: their denial, their accusing him of poetry (verse 69), and their mockery. The prohibition of grief lightens his load and lifts the burden of their hurtful speech from his shoulders, for their denial diminishes the truth in nothing, and its bearer has no cause to grieve over it.
He gave the reason for the prohibition in words that reassure the heart: "Indeed We know what they conceal and what they declare." Isrār (root s-r-r) is the hiding of a thing in the self or in speech, in secret, and iʿlān (root ʿ-l-n) is its open showing. He thereby gathered the two ends of speech and act, the hidden and the manifest, so nothing of their state escapes His knowledge. The reason amounts to this: do not grieve, for the One you convey from encompasses what they conceal of scheming and what they show of obstinacy, and He suffices you against them and takes their affair in hand. Upon you is only the conveying; their reckoning for what they concealed and declared belongs to the One who knows both. The encompassing knowledge thus removes the cause of grief: what is hidden in them is uncovered, what they declared is counted, and the recompense lies in the hand of the One who encompassed both matters.
"So let not their speech grieve you": the fā arranges the consolation upon the disclosure of their gods' incapacity. Ḥuzn (ḥ-z-n) is the thickness of grief that comes over the heart, from ḥazn, the rugged ground of the earth, and the conveyer is forbidden to let this thickness enter his heart from their denial and their accusation. The reassuring reason follows: "Indeed We know what they conceal" (s-r-r, the hiding) "and what they declare" (ʿ-l-n, the showing); He gathered the hidden and the manifest, so nothing of them escapes Him. The sense is, do not grieve: the One you convey from encompasses their concealed scheming and their declared obstinacy, and He suffices you against them. Upon you is the conveying, and their reckoning belongs to the One who knows the secret and the open.
