﴾ Burn in it today, for what you were denying. ﴿
"Burn in it today" is a command whose meaning is rebuke and humiliation, not obligation. The term ṣaly (root ṣ-l-y) denotes suffering the Fire's heat and meeting it with the body until one feels its searing; it comes from ṣalā said of meat, that is, to roast it over a fire. They are commanded, then, to be clothed in the Fire and to suffer its heat directly, rather than merely to be near it. The word "today" corresponds to what recurred in the scene of bliss, "today are in an occupation" (verse 55): it is a single day in which the two parties are sorted, these in scorching and those in shades, and the opposition between the two scenes is complete.
"For what you were denying": the bāʾ is causal, and the scorching is the recompense of their denial, not a wrong done to them, in confirmation of "no soul is wronged in anything" (verse 54). Kufr (root k-f-r) is veiling and covering, from kafara, to cover, and the denier is a coverer of the truth on which His signs stood. The form "you were denying" conveys continuance and fixedness: their denial was a constant habit, not the denial of a moment. The punishment is bound to a settled act that they repeated, and it returns upon them as the fruit of a deed returns to its doer. Every argument is cut off by this: they were seized for what they persisted in, covering the manifest truth by it, and not for what they did not do.
"Burn in it today" is a command of rebuke and humiliation, not of obligation. Ṣaly (ṣ-l-y) is suffering the Fire's heat and meeting it with the body, from the roasting of meat over a fire: a being clothed in it, rather than mere nearness. The word "today" corresponds to "today are in an occupation" (verse 55), a single day in which the two parties are sorted, these in scorching and those in shades. Next comes "for what you were denying", where the bāʾ is causal, and so the scorching is the recompense of denial and not a wrong done to them (confirming verse 54). Kufr (k-f-r) is veiling and covering, and the form "you were denying" conveys continuance, a constant habit rather than the denial of a moment; the punishment returns upon them as the fruit of a deed returns.
