﴾ This is the Hell you were promised. ﴿
"This is the Hell": the demonstrative "this" points to something present and standing before them, not to something absent and reported. The Fire they used to deny has come before their eyes and is seen. Jahannam is the name of the abode of punishment, and its very sound carries a heaviness and a depth of bottom suited to what it names. Pointing to a thing as present is more emphatic in rebuke than reporting it as absent: what had been the subject of their dispute, when they deemed it far-off, has become witnessed and admits no denial, and the dispute is cut off by sight.
"You were promised" is a reminder that what is now present is the very thing promised before. The verb (root w-ʿ-d) is in the passive, which keeps the Promiser known: the promise was repeated to them in the world, and they denied it. The form "you were promised" conveys the repetition and continuance of the promise; it was a promise renewed, rather than a warning given once. This is a belated answer to their mocking question "When is this promise?" (verse 48): they said "when", deeming it far-off, and now they are told, "This is what you were promised." The promised thing they reckoned slow in coming is present, and their seeking of haste has turned to anguish where there is no escape.

﴾ Voici l'Enfer qui vous était promis. ﴿
