﴾ And it is not jest. ﴿
Hazl, in Arabic, is a root that gathers weakness and slipping loose. Hazala al-jismu is said when a body grows weak and thin, and hazala fī kalāmihi when a man slips loose from what he meant, saying what raises a laugh and binds nothing. Hazl is speech with no knot in it, running between the lips and leaving no earnest trace.
And the verse denies this class of speech of the word it has just called a word that decides. It is not speech that its settings color and its circumstances use up, nor speech that is said and then walked away from. Earnestness in speech is marked by this: it clothes itself in what it says, and it leaves in the reader and the hearer a trace that stays with them.
The bāʾ in bi-l-hazl is called the added bāʾ when the phrase is parsed, but in meaning it is no addition. It enters upon the predicate of the negating mā and gives the denial more force. Had it been said wa-mā huwa hazlan, the meaning would have stood. But "And it is not jest," with the bāʾ clinging to the jest, clothes the jest in a denying clothing and shuts the door of supposing for good.
And within the Surah itself the pattern of strengthening repeats. The eighth verse strengthened with inna and the lām: "He is, over the bringing of him back, fully able." The previous verse strengthened with inna and the lām: "It is, truly, a word that decides." And here the strengthening is by the bāʾ: "And it is not jest." Three instances of strengthening follow one another in the Surah, as though the verses were tying one knot after another over what they say.
If the word is a decider and is not jest, the hearer's standing toward it is fixed. What decides is not taken up as a pleasantry, and what is not jest is not received as though it were jest. Listening to what decides should be to the measure of what it decides with.
And the two verses that follow uncover what waits for the one who does not take the word to its measure: ﴿إِنَّهُمْ يَكِيدُونَ كَيْدًا﴾. Those who meet the word with a devising have their devising met by a devising of the same shape. Whoever did not take the word as a decider finds himself inside a devising that decides between him and what he was aiming at.
This verse completes the answer by denial: "And it is not jest." The previous verse affirmed a word that decides, and the denial here completes the fixing from the other side. Al-hazl, from h-z-l, is weakness and a slipping loose from what was meant: hazala al-jismu, the body thinned; hazala fī kalāmihi, he said what raises a laugh and binds nothing. Hazl is speech with no knot in it, running between the lips and leaving no earnest trace. And the bāʾ in bi-l-hazl is called added when the phrase is parsed, but in meaning it is no addition: it enters upon the predicate of the negating mā and presses the denial onto the thing denied twice over. It is as though the verse is not content to deny the jest but shuts its door upon it. Earnestness in the word is fixed by denying jest of it as deciding is fixed by denying scattering. And the hearer's standing is fixed along with it: what decides is not taken up as a pleasantry.
﴾ Et ce n'est pas plaisanterie. ﴿
