﴾ Executor of whatever He wills. ﴿
The form faʿʿāl, with its doubled letter, is a form of abundance and of continuance. He does not carry out one act and then stop. The act pours from him without a break. And the root f-ʿ-l, as it came in the seventh verse, is a going out from within to a trace in the real. Here the trace does not stop.
And in this Surah, which recorded the act of the companions of the trench, "what they were doing," this quality comes to set that act in its true scale. They were doing, but they were not executors of whatever they willed. Their will covered what they could see and had no power over what they could not see. As for the other side: executor of whatever he wills, of everything he wills.
"He wills," from r-w-d, is a walking in search until the goal is reached. The rāʾid is the one who goes ahead to find what his people may be brought to. But this willing, in the verse, is not the willing of a seeker who may come back empty; it is the willing of a faʿʿāl, so all that was willed has come about.
And here the arc of the verses closes: the severe seizure, the originating and the returning, the Shielder and the Settled-in-affection, the Holder of the raised canopy and the Vast-in-amplitude, all of this issues from an "Executor of whatever He wills." Not one of them is bounded by what was not willed, and not one of them is without a trace in the real.
Three words close the chain of qualities that ran from the twelfth verse: "Executor of whatever He wills." Faʿʿāl is an intensive form from f-ʿ-l: not one who acts at times, but one whose acting is his continuous nature, with no gap in it. And "He wills," from r-w-d, is the walking in search until the thing sought is reached; and joining faʿʿāl to "whatever He wills" removes the interval between the willing and the happening. In a Surah that recorded "what they were doing," the act of the companions of the trench, this close comes to set the act in its scale: the companions of the trench willed, but their will met limits they did not make out. On this side the act never lags behind the will. The seizure and the shielding and the originating and the returning and the gardens all come from this Executor. Not one of them is conditioned on what was not willed, and not one of them hangs suspended between the willing and the happening.
﴾ Exécuteur de tout ce qu'Il veut. ﴿
