Commentary
"Did We not" is a question that carries its own answer. The verse opens on a question particle set upon a negation, a-lam, a form that establishes what is already so and calls him to bear witness to it against himself, rather than asking for news not yet known. The asker knows and the one asked knows; the listener is only roused to look at what lies within his own frame and not to deny it. "Did We not appoint" amounts to bidding him consider whether he does not find it in himself.
Coming to this question after speaking of the human being "in toil, in straitened hardship," the Surah ties the rousing to his present state: the one who reckons "that no one will ever have power over him" is reminded that what he sees with, and what he holds as his own, is not of his own making. The question brings the one who presumes on himself back to the root of the favour that is in him.
"Appoint" denotes a making that fixes a thing in its place. The verb is najʿal, and the root j-ʿ-l turns on setting a thing in its space in a form it keeps to. It means making a thing thus and settling it in its place and its task; bringing into being from nothing alone does not exhaust it. Whoever has made a thing so has brought it about and fixed it in an intended form, neither in idle play nor by chance.
The verb najʿal is ascribed through the nūn of majesty, which assigns the act to the Maker Himself, not to the one it was made for. The two eyes were set in him and settled in their place; they did not grow by their owner's own power. So the li in lahu, "for him," makes the human being the seat of the favour and one who benefits from it, not the owner of its source.
"Two eyes" are two witnesses in the face that make the case firm. ʿAynayn is an intended dual, two and not "an eye," so that two doors for looking gather in the face. ʿAyn is from ʿ-y-n, which gives a spring that wells over and a place of looking through which sight passes out, and what joins the two is an emerging from depth and an extending to the outside. The eye, then, wells over with looking as the spring wells over with water, passing out to what is around it and bringing back to its owner the image of what it does not touch.
The gift of two eyes makes the favour of sight present upon him, beyond his denying: with them he sees the way of which the following verses will speak, and with them he sees "the two high paths." The one given what he sees with is accordingly called to look with it at his present state and at where he is heading, not to close it against what lies before him.
The verse comes as a question set upon a negation, "Did We not appoint," an affirmation that calls him to witness against himself, not an asking after something unknown. The root j-ʿ-l is the setting of a thing in its space in an intended form and its settling there, so the two eyes are a making fixed in the face, not a growth sprung from their owner. The eye, from ʿ-y-n, is a spring that wells over and a place of looking that passes out from depth, made two so that two doors for seeing gather. So the verse brings the human being who presumes on himself back to what is in him that he did not make: two given eyes he sees with, two witnesses in his face that the favour preceded him, and a call to look with them where looking is due.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"Did We not appoint for him two eyes" is read as an enumeration of Allah's favours upon the human, in a context of reminding and pressing the case: after the human is described as self-satisfied with what he spent and reckoning that none has seen him, the faculties by which he sees, speaks, and is guided are counted over him, and then he is called to assault the steep pass. The two eyes here are the known organs in the face.
A reading that places the verse within the count of favours, leading up to the charge of the steep pass.
A root-reading
Najʿal (root j-ʿ-l): the setting of a thing in its place in a form intended for it, and its fixing there, so the two eyes are set, not grown. ʿAynayn (root ʿ-y-n): a spring that wells up and a place of looking that pierces from depth, made dual so that two gates for sight gather. And a-lam is an affirmation calling the human being to witness what is in him. The li in lahu makes him the seat of the favour, not its origin. The verse becomes: "Do you not find in your face two given gates welling with sight, a making fixed in you and not of your making?"
A reading that hears, in both roots, a making that fixes in its place and an eye that wells with sight.
The two readings do not conflict. The first places the eyes in the count of favours; the second hears, in both roots, the shape of a fixed making and a welling sight. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Reflection
The question "Did We not appoint for him two eyes" moves the human being from the state of the self-satisfied to the state of one who looks at himself. The first thing the verse stirs is that the human turn to the nearest thing to him and find he owns none of its origin: two eyes he opens and sight wells out, which he neither made nor was commanded to make.
Then the dual is intended in the composition: two gates, not one. The gathering of two eyes in the face answers another doubling the Surah will bring: a tongue and two lips, and two heights (al-najdayn). The verse is a link in a chain of enumeration by which the human is presented equipped for the road, then called to assault it. The granted sight is a prelude to the responsibility for where the looking turns.
And the eye's place in the face makes it a witness that does not absent itself from its owner: with it he sees the two heights the Surah names, so he cannot claim he did not see the path. The case is lodged in the organ itself before it is spoken by the tongue.
There may be, in folding two eyes onto a single face, a hint that sight in the human was built on two gates and not one, and that what is grasped by two neighbouring eyes may perhaps be deeper than what is grasped by one: depth, distance, the placing of a thing in space. And perhaps the mention of the two eyes within the setting of hardship and the steep pass is an intimation that the one granted vision is granted it to see what is farther than the place of his foot: a path and an end, not only a present. All of this is surmise, and we stop at its limit.
