Commentary
"Does he reckon" names a supposing that runs a count and gets the count wrong. The hamza at the head of the verse is a question carrying disapproval: he is stopped at a mistaken supposition so that its mistake may be laid bare to him, not asked so that he may answer. The verb yaḥsabu is from ḥ-s-b, a counting that runs and keeps to measure, that tallies and estimates. Whoever "reckons" a thing has estimated it within himself and built upon it, as though he had run a sum and come out with a result to lean on.
Here the reckoning falls on something false: the human being estimated that his deed would pass with no witness, and on that estimate he built his daring. So the verse lays bare a fault in the reckoning itself, rather than merely the heedlessness of the one reckoning: he supposed he had tallied the matter, and he erred in his tally, for he left out of his count a witness who is never absent.
"No one has seen him" denies a seeing in fancy, not in fact. Yarahu, "has seen him," is from r-ʾ-y, a grasping by the eye that runs out and closes over the thing seen, and so encompasses it. Whoever has been seen has been encompassed and his state is known, with nothing of him left hidden. The negation in lam yarahu is a negation within the human being's supposition alone: he reckons that no eye has encompassed his deed, and so he conducts himself as though sight had been lifted from him.
The wording sets what the human being supposes against what is: in his fancy a sight denied, and in truth a sight that encompasses, from which no movement slips away. So what the verse recounts is his own reckoning, not a statement that he went unseen, and it then lets the context answer that reckoning with what comes next: "Did We not appoint for him two eyes?" How, then, does the one in whom the eye was set so that he might see reckon that he moves along with no eye seeing him?
The words "no one" form a negation that takes in every witness. Aḥad is from ʾ-ḥ-d, the one that is neither doubled nor divided, and under a negation aḥad takes in every possible one: "no one has seen him" denies sight to any seer whatever and leaves not a single one excepted. In his reckoning, then, the human being denied the whole kind, not one particular witness: no eye at all has encompassed him.
Here lies the flaw in his reckoning: the negation took in every one, so he supposed he had shut the door on every eye, forgetting that aḥad, left unrestricted, can be held within a negation only by one who encompasses all that sees, a thing the one who supposes lacks. So the word he supposed would keep him safe is the word that exposes him: for a negation of every witness to hold, a knowledge of every witness is required, and that is beyond the human being.
The verse opens with a hamza of disapproval that stops the human being at a mistaken supposition: "Does he reckon." Reckoning, from ḥ-s-b, is a counting that estimates and builds, and he has estimated that his deed passes with no witness. Next comes "has seen him," from r-ʾ-y, a sight that encompasses the thing seen, denied in his fancy and not in fact. "No one," from ʾ-ḥ-d, takes in every seer, so he supposed he had shut out every eye at once. So the verse lays bare the flaw in the reckoning: for a negation of every witness to hold, an encompassing of every witness is required, and that is beyond the one who supposes; and the word he supposed would keep him safe is the very word that turns his reckoning back upon him.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"Does he reckon that no one has seen him?" is read as a rebuke to one who spent his wealth boastfully or in defiance, supposing that no one is aware of his deed. The witness who does not absent Himself is taken to be Allah, so the question is a denial against one who fancied that Allah does not see him. It is joined to what precedes it, the mention of wealth squandered in "I have destroyed piled-up wealth."
A reading that names the witness and joins the verse to the preceding context of boastful spending.
A root-reading
Yaḥsabu (root ḥ-s-b): a counting that estimates and builds, so the human being ran a sum and came out with a result to lean on. Yarahu (root r-ʾ-y): a sight that encompasses the seen thing so nothing of it stays hidden, negated in his fancy and not in fact. Aḥad (root ʾ-ḥ-d): a one that is not divided, which under a negation sweeps up every seer. The verse becomes: "Does he build his estimate on the claim that his act has passed and no eye at all encompassed it, when the denial of every witness would require an encompassing of every witness, which he is unable to hold?"
A reading that hears the reckoning as a mistaken estimate, and the all-sweeping denial as the speaker's own undoing.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names the witness and fixes its context; the second hears, in the roots, the shape of a mistaken reckoning and a denial that turns back on the one who utters it. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Reflection
The verse uncovers a recurring structure in the human soul: that a person estimates himself hidden from eyes and builds his boldness on that estimate. The flaw is not in the act alone but in the reckoning that precedes it: a supposition that the absence of a watcher lifts accountability.
And the verse runs a refutation from inside its own words: "no one has seen him" is an all-sweeping negation, and the denial of every witness holds only for one who has encompassed every witness. The human being who lacks that encompassing utters what exposes his incapacity: he claims a total knowledge in order to secure his act, while he possesses none of it. The very power to deny every witness is the attribute of the witness he denied.
The context joins this to what follows: "Did We not make for him two eyes?" The eye by which a person sees others is a proof against him: one in whom the instrument of sight was set knows of necessity that sight is possible and real, so how does he reckon himself alone outside the reach of every eye?
Perhaps this supposition, that a person reckons himself unseen, is deeper in the human make-up than a passing error. Behaving one way in concealment and another in the open may be an ancient trait in a creature that learns when it is watched and when it can hide, and tunes its conduct to a watcher's presence or absence. The verse may address that very depth: it strips from the human being the refuge he long leaned on, that concealment lifts accountability, by raising a witness who cannot be tuned around for presence and absence, because He does not absent Himself.
