﴾ And for them therein are benefits and drinks. Will they not then give thanks? ﴿
After the riding and the eating (verse 72), He added something more general: "And for them therein are benefits and drinks." Manāfiʿ (root n-f-ʿ) is the plural of manfaʿa, that by which a person attains good or wards off harm; it comes indefinite and plural, and in that form it embraces every benefit besides riding and eating. Mashārib (root sh-r-b) is the plural of mashrab, what is drunk, and what is meant here is their milk. Drinking is singled out after the general term "benefits" for its standing: milk is food and drink together, and it issues from amid what one would not expect goodness from. So the blessings are graded: ownership, then subduing, then carriage and eating, then benefits and drinks, a completeness that leaves no need unmet.
"Will they not then give thanks?" is a question of denial, directed at their abandoning of thanks while the blessings multiply. The term shukr (root sh-k-r) denotes the acknowledgment of a blessing and its expending toward the pleasure of the Bestower. This close repeats the close of the verse of fruit, "will they not then give thanks" (verse 35): as the enumeration of the blessings of crops was sealed with an urging to thanks, the enumeration of the blessings of livestock is sealed with it. So the two blessings, plant and animal, lead to one aim, the thanking of the Bestower. The denial in "will they not" discloses how strange their state is: the blessings are manifest and successive, yet they turn from thanks and take gods besides Him (verse 74). So the rebuke serves as an entry into the exposure of those incapable gods.
After the riding and the eating, He added something more general: "And for them therein are benefits and drinks." Manāfiʿ (n-f-ʿ), indefinite and plural, embraces every benefit besides riding and eating, while mashārib (sh-r-b) are their milk, singled out for its standing as food and drink together, issuing from what one would not expect. So the blessings are graded: ownership, then subduing, then carriage and eating, then benefits and drinks. The verse then closes with "will they not then give thanks" (sh-k-r, the acknowledgment of the blessing and its expending in its proper direction), which repeats the close of the verse of fruit (verse 35), so the two blessings, plant and animal, lead to the thanking of the Bestower. The denial discloses the strangeness of their state, successive blessings met by their turning away, and so the rebuke becomes an entry into the exposure of their incapable gods (verse 75).
