﴾ But those who covered are in denial. ﴿
The particle bal does not negate what comes before it; it steps past it to set the attention on something else. The account of the armies has been given. Firʿawn and Thamūd have been named. Then comes bal: but those who are listening now, they are in denial. The turn makes a facing pair: on one side the armies that became an account, on the other those who still stand inside the denial.
And this passage is meant. The Surah does not close on what took place; it carries what took place forward into the present. Firʿawn and Thamūd are an account that was. The denial named here is a state still running. What was destroyed before taught nothing to those who deny now.
The preposition fī, "in", points to residence and not to passing. They are not near the denial, and they are not circling it. They are inside it, like a thing in its vessel. And takdhīb, from k-dh-b, is the ascribing of lying to what came. The one who denies does not say "I do not understand", he says "what came is not true". Denial is a stance, then, and not a hesitation. And their being "in" it tells that they do not come near the door by which one leaves it.
Bal is a turn that redirects: after the account of Firʿawn and Thamūd the Surah moves to those present in time, and says, "But those who covered are in denial." "They covered", from k-f-r, is a continuous covering that holds back what was about to open and closes it again; the one who covers is not the one who does not know, but the one who lays a cover over what he knows. And the perfect form "they covered" describes a state that holds, not an act that is finished. Then "in denial", from k-dh-b, is the ascribing of lying to what came, a directed act and not a mere wavering. The most telling thing in the verse is the preposition "in": they are neither near the denial nor passing through it, they are inside it like a thing in its vessel, a dwelling and not a crossing. The account of Firʿawn and Thamūd reached them and did not bring them out; the account came, and the denial stayed a dwelling.
