Commentary
Their extinction was followed by a comment with a strange object of address: "O the sorrow over the servants!" Ḥasra (root ḥ-s-r) denotes the most intense yearning and regret, such that the heart is laid bare by the severity of grief; it comes from ḥasara, to uncover and remove the veil. The call here summons the sorrow itself rather than any person, as though it were called to be present: this is your place, so come. The manner magnifies the gravity of the scene, their state having reached such grief as deserves that sorrow itself be called for it. The sorrow is "over the servants": a lament over a fate they made with their own hands, with no gloating over their extinction.
He then made clear what calls for the sorrow: "No messenger comes to them but they hold him in mockery." The form is an absolute restriction: every bearer of a message was met with mockery, not one excepted. The verb "they mock" (root h-z-ʾ) is in the present tense, conveying renewal and continuance, which marks a settled, repeated habit, not a passing stance. So the sorrow is over a recurring pattern, not over a single perishing: whenever the warning came to them they turned it into a jest, and so shut upon themselves the door of deliverance time after time. By this their end is linked to a wider way than their own incident.
The comment on their extinction takes the form of a call with a strange object of address: "O the sorrow over the servants!" Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as a lament over the servants who mocked the messengers; it is said the speaker is the deniers on the Day of Rising, or the angels grieving over them.
A root-reading
Ḥasra (ḥ-s-r) is the laying-bare of the heart from intense grief, and calling it "O sorrow" summons the lament itself, magnifying the scene. And "they mock" (h-z-ʾ) is present-tense conveying renewal: a settled habit, not a passing stance. So the sorrow is over a recurring pattern they made with their own hands.
A reading that hears in the present-tense "they mock" a repeated pattern, not a single incident.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Reflection
This verse holds a singular place in the flow: after the scene of extinction comes no gloating, no proclamation of victory, but an open call of grief, "O the sorrow over the servants!" The one called is no person to be blamed, no assembly to be addressed, but sorrow itself, summoned to attend the scene. This reveals that the end of the turners-away is not a site of triumph to be celebrated, but a site of tragedy to be lamented: lost is the one who might have been saved.
And His saying "over the servants" opens the reflection wider: He did not say "over them," confining them to their faction, but "the servants", a description gathering everyone held in the grasp of nurture and origination. Those upon whom the sorrow descends are the servants precisely as servants: brought into being by the One who calls over them in grief, and yet they preferred derision to listening. The paradox is that the One able to destroy by a single cry (verse 29) is Himself the One who releases the call of grief over them, power to destroy does not cancel the lament over loss.
As for what calls forth the sorrow, "No messenger comes to them but they hold him in mockery" reveals it: their greatest fault is not the denial of one message, but the turning of every warning into a jest. Mockery is more dangerous than denial: the denier may argue and reconsider, but the mocker shuts the door of consideration before opening it, making light of what he never weighed. Here lies the reflection for every reader: how many a sincere call have we met with a scornful smile before ever listening to it? The absolute sorrow warns against derision becoming a habit that closes the heart, pattern after pattern.
