Commentary
"So glory": the fā arranges the hallowing upon what preceded, the statement of His power by the word "Be" (verse 82). Subḥān (root s-b-ḥ) is a hallowing that removes the Hallowed far from every deficiency and incapacity. When it was established that His command is "Be, and it is," He was hallowed above any thing making Him incapable or any one resembling Him. In "In whose hand is the dominion of all things", malakūt (root m-l-k) is an intensive form of ownership, more emphatic than bare ownership: the complete ownership that penetrates the interior and exterior of things. "In His hand" is a figure for the perfection of power, of disposal and of the complete grasp, and "all things" comprehends the existents without exception. So the One in whose hand are the keys of all things is not made incapable of raising what perished, and so the sealing of the sura with the complete dominion crowns all that preceded of the signs of power.
"And to Him you are returned" is a close that returns the whole matter to one destiny. Rujūʿ (root r-j-ʿ) is the going back to the One from whom the beginning was. The fronting of "to Him" conveys confinement: the return is to Him alone, not to another. The passive of "you are returned" keeps the Returner known: they are brought back compellingly, with no choice in the return. So the sura that opened with the affirmation of the message (verses 2-5), and passed through the story, the signs, the rising and the recompense, is sealed with that to which the whole end leads, the return to the Owner of the dominion. The One in whose hand is everything is the One to whom the destiny belongs, so there is no escape from His dominion and no return except to Him. By this the opening of the sura joins with its seal: a sending-down from the Mighty, the Merciful (verse 5), and a return to the One in whose hand is the dominion of all things.

Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as a seal of the sura with the hallowing of Allah who owns all things and disposes of them, and to Him is the return of all creatures on the Day of Rising for the reckoning and the recompense.
A root-reading
"Glory" (s-b-ḥ) is a removing-far from every deficiency. And "dominion" (m-l-k) is an intensive form: the complete, penetrating ownership, and "in His hand" the perfection of grasp. And "to Him you are returned" (r-j-ʿ): a fronting for confinement, a passive keeping the Returner known. So the opening joins with the seal.
A reading that ties the seal "to Him you are returned" to the sura's opening "a sending-down of the Mighty, the Merciful."
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Reflection
The sura is sealed, having circled through the story, the cosmos, the rising, the Garden, the Fire, and the dispute, with two sentences that gather all its meanings: a hallowing, a dominion, and a return. It is as though all that preceded of the signs of power was ascending with the reader to this summit: "in whose hand is the dominion of all things." For the earth that is given life, the orbits that swim, the ship that carries, the bones that are raised, all are sides of one dominion in one hand. And whoever beholds this gathering, the scattering of his gaze toward the dispersed means departs from him: there is in reality no doer but the Owner of the dominion.
In sealing the verse with "and to Him you are returned" is a message summarizing the aim of the whole sura: the complete dominion is not only a proof of power, but a proclamation of destiny. For the One in whose hand is everything is the One to whom everything returns, so the human owns not to exit His dominion in life, nor to escape his return after death. And this answers the one hastening the promise (verse 48) and the denier of the rising (verse 78): the return is not a possibility to be disputed, but an ending written upon everyone who entered His dominion, and none entered His dominion but that he is returning to Him.
As for the believing reader, he finds in this seal a rest and an awe together: a rest because his whole affair is in the hand of a Merciful Owner with whom nothing is lost, and an awe because his destiny is to Him without fail. So the reflection is that a person live between these two: he commits his affair to the One in whose hand is the dominion, and prepares for the day of return his provision. So whoever seals the reading of Yā-Sīn with this verse, let him seal it with what it was sealed with: a hallowing that casts from the heart the imagining of incapacity in Allah's regard, and a certainty that the whole road, however long, ends "to Him."
