Commentary
The wāw of "by the heaven" is the wāw of the oath. The verse is opened with it the way a door is opened onto a wide courtyard. And the heaven is from the root s-m-w: height and rising. The heaven is not a shut ceiling; it is what rises above you and widens every time you lift your gaze.
And the oath by it does not summon it as an inert thing called to witness: it makes it the arena of the scene. It is as though the verse said to the reader, look where you are about to be led. Not toward a ground you stand on, but toward an expanse that widens above you.
Al-Ṭāriq is the active participle of ṭaraqa: to strike a door with rap after rap. In Arabic the word was kept for the one who comes by night, because the day has no need to knock. The day comes in through the window; the night asks leave with knocks.
And the one who knocks knocks with two things: a hand on a door, and an event on a sleeping soul. Whoever knocks at your door by night brings you news that will not wait. This is what the verse does to the reader: it wakes him with a rap that reaches him from the heaven, not from the earth.
The wāw between "the heaven" and "the night-comer" gathers the two into a single scene. The heaven is the arena, and the night-comer is the one at work in it. As though the heaven were a great door, and the night-comer what raps at that door. And the reader still does not know what the night-comer is. The Surah takes up, in the second verse, a question whose answer it undertakes itself: "And what could let you know what the night-comer is?"
And so the oath opens the Surah upon a simple idea: what comes to you from above comes at an hour you are not waiting for it, and raps at your door with a rap after which whoever listened does not sleep again.
The Surah opens with two oaths joined by a single wāw: "By the heaven, and by the night-comer that knocks." Al-samāʾ, from s-m-w, is the high expanse stretched out above the head. Al-Ṭāriq, from ṭ-r-q, is the active participle of ṭaraqa, to knock at a door: a repeated rap that comes in the night. The word was kept, in the Arabic tongue, for the one who comes by night, because his rap is heard in a silence no light covers over; the day is seen and the night is heard, and the one who knocks comes to you at the hour of sleep, not at the hour of sight. And the wāw gathers the heaven and the night-comer into one scene: an open arena above the head, and a rap that comes down out of it. And the night-comer is not yet made known: the naming is held back until the third verse, so this verse wakes the ear with the rap before it knows who is knocking. As though the whole heaven had become a door.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"By the heaven and by the night-star," typically read as an oath by a specific named star or class of stars, with the identification fixed before the verse moves on.
A reading that hurries from the oath to the identification, and steps over the image of the knock itself.
A root-reading
Al-samā' (root s-m-w): the high open expanse, the rising surface above the head. Al-Ṭāriq (root ṭ-r-q): the active participle of "to knock at night", the rap on the door that comes when sleep has begun. The conjunction folds the two into one scene: an expanse above, and a knock coming from it. The verse defers the identification until the verse after next, leaving the listener with the sound of knocking before the name of the knocker arrives.
A reading that holds the image of the knock instead of rushing to name the one who knocks.
The two readings do not conflict. The first hurries to identify; the second hears the knock before the knocker is named. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
The pattern of swearing by the heaven: a recurring arena for a recurring purpose
The heaven is repeatedly summoned in the Qur'an as the arena of oath, and the oath upon it is never quite the same. Look: in al-Dhāriyāt, "by the heaven of woven patterns" (51:7), the sky of intricate weave. In al-Burūj, "by the heaven of constellations" (85:1), the sky of measured stations. And in al-Ṭāriq, "by the heaven and the night-comer", the sky as the arena of the knock.
The rule: the heaven in the Qur'an is not a closed ceiling but a living arena, and what comes out of it varies. Once a piercing star, once measured stations, once intricate patterns. Each description names what the reader is being made to attend to in this Surah. The heaven in al-Ṭāriq is the heaven of awakening: what comes from it does not come by day but by night, and does not enter as light, but knocks as sound.
The law of knocking: what is heard before it is seen
The choice of al-Ṭāriq before naming what it is is itself a Qur'anic discipline. Notice how the text defers the identification: "By the heaven and the night-comer, and what will make you know what the night-comer is, the piercing star". Three verses sit between the name and the named. The listener hears the knock before knowing who knocks.
This is the same shape as al-Qāriʿa: "the Striker, what is the Striker, and what will make you know what the Striker is?". And al-Ḥāqqa: "the True, what is the True, and what will make you know what the True is?". A whole Surah opens on something named, then questioned, then gradually disclosed. The rule: the awesome in the Qur'an opens its hearing before its sight. You hear the Striker strike before you see her; you hear the Knocker knock before you see his star.
The piercing star and the revelation: the heaven that pierces the silence
The third verse reveals: the night-comer is "the piercing star," al-najm al-thāqib. Thaqb in Arabic is a piercing that passes through. The star pierces the darkness with its light, and pierces the silence with its rising. Then the fourth verse reveals the point: "there is no soul without a guardian over it". What knocks at the door of the soul? The star is an image; the guardian is the meaning.
Revelation itself in the Qur'an comes down as a knock from the heaven. In al-Najm, "taught by one of mighty powers"; in al-Qadr, "the angels and the Spirit descend in it"; in al-Isrāʾ, "the trusted Spirit". All are images of something descending from above to a soul sleeping below, knocking on it so that it wakes. Sūrat al-Ṭāriq sets the scene bare: the heaven is open, the knock comes, and the soul is guarded because it is heard from above.
