Commentary
The wāw that opens is the wāw of the oath. It stands at the head of the verse like a curtain drawn back on the upper expanse. Heaven, from the root s-m-w, is a rising that keeps extending, not a ceiling that closes the view. Every time the gaze climbs in it, it finds a width that does not run out.
This opening sets the eye in order before the ear. The Surah begins neither with a judgment on people nor with the description of a destiny. It begins by lifting the face of the one who reads. Whoever does not see the width above him does not understand the narrowness of what will be said next.
The burūj, from b-r-j, are the jutting out and the coming into view after withdrawal. In the tongue, a burj is what rises, appears, and sets itself apart from what surrounds it; its edges are seen because it does not dissolve into the surface. Hence the name of the burūj of the sky: prominent places of appearing, marks that are not content to be in the height but stand upright in it.
To say "holder of the visible towers" moves the heaven from a blue emptiness to a known structure. The verse seems to say: do not look upward as toward a silent vacancy. In the expanse there are towers, in the towers marks, and in the marks a testimony that runs ahead of what the Surah will say of the witness and of what is witnessed.
After this verse will come "And by the day that has been promised," then "And by a witness, and by what is witnessed." The first oath is therefore not cut off from the road. The heaven holding the visible towers is the first witness of the Surah: a height filled with what appears, holds, and lets itself be seen.
From here the movement of the Surah sets out: from a height peopled with marks, toward a promised day, toward a witness and what is witnessed. The first verse puts the eye in its place before putting the heart to the test. Witnessing is not asked of an eye that has not learned to raise its head.
The Surah opens its oath with the heaven, from s-m-w, the high extended reach that is not cut off. But the oath does not stop at height alone: it fixes it with an attribute that never leaves it, "holder of the visible towers." The burūj, from b-r-j, are what jutted out and rose until it became a visible mark on an open surface, like the tower that stands apart from its surroundings because it does not dissolve into the background. And the wāw of the oath, at the head of the verse, draws a curtain back on this upper expanse before anything is said of people or of destiny. Heaven here is not a smooth blue emptiness, but a known structure furnished with standing marks. Swearing by it at the threshold of the Surah is not an ornament: it is teaching the eye how to see. Whoever has not learned to raise his head toward a height filled with marks will not understand the narrowness of what is coming, and will not be made ready for the witnessing that the following verses will build.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
"By the sky full of great stars," or "by the heaven of constellations." The verse is usually heard as an oath by the sky marked with star-stations.
A reading that preserves the familiar image of a marked, star-bearing heaven.
A root-reading
Al-samā' (root s-m-w) is the high, extended expanse. Al-burūj (root b-r-j) are what stand out and rise into visibility, like towers or visible stations. The verse is not only pointing to stars; it is naming a heaven whose height is marked by visible signs. The first oath prepares the next two: a promised day, then witness and witnessed.
A reading that hears prominence and visibility in burūj before rushing to a fixed map of the sky.
The two readings do not conflict. The first keeps the familiar star-marked sky; the second returns burūj to the root-sense of visible prominence. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
The Companions of the Ditch: a story told for the sake of witnessing
The Surah opens with an oath upon the witness and the witnessed, then comes down to the Companions of the Ditch: "slain were the companions of the ditch, the fire with its fuel, when they sat over it, and they were upon what they did to the believers, witnesses" (85:4-7). The paradox: the unbelievers here are "witnesses", they watch, they look on. But the heaven of constellations witnesses against them. Their witnessing over their victims is met by the cosmos witnessing over them.
This reveals a law: a witness is not a spectator but one implicated. He who witnessed a wrong and did not push it back is a partner in the witnessing. The cosmos of burūj is a witness of the other kind: a witness that preserves and does not forget. That is why the Qur'an repeats: "truly the hearing, the sight, and the heart, all of those will be asked about" (17:36). The limbs are witnesses, the heaven of constellations is a witness, the earth tells its news (99:4). Perhaps the whole cosmos is a witness.
The law of the Ditch: three stories joined in one pattern
The Surah gathers three stories in one breath: the Companions of the Ditch, Pharaoh, Thamūd. "Has the report of the armies come to you, of Pharaoh and Thamūd?" (85:17-18). The paradox: in the Ditch story the believers win in an outwardly tragic form, they burn. Then come Pharaoh and Thamūd, tyrants who were destroyed. The pattern: the believers win even as they burn, and the oppressors lose even at the height of their power.
This is the Qur'anic law in narrative: victory and defeat are not measured by what appears. The Companions of the Cave were saved in a cave; the Elephant army was defeated by birds; Joseph reigned after prison. The visible image contradicts the hidden reality. The Surah anchors persecuted believers: what is burned in the world has been written in a "preserved tablet" (85:22). And the fire that ate them on earth does not touch what is in the tablet.
The "preserved tablet" at the Surah's close: the book against the fire
The Surah opens on a heaven of burūj and closes on a "preserved tablet" (85:22). The burūj are seen; the tablet is preserved. The cosmos may be in two layers: a visible one marked by burūj, and a hidden one written in the tablet. Perhaps the latter is the reality, not the former.
The preserved tablet meets what the Qur'an says elsewhere: in al-Wāqiʿa, "in a hidden book, none touch it but the purified" (56:78-79); in al-Raʿd, "God blots out what He wills and confirms, and with Him is the Mother of the Book" (13:39). The cosmos runs by pairs: a visible board and a preserved board; a fire that burns and a book that does not burn. The Companions of the Ditch burned in the fire and were written in the tablet. And perhaps the book triumphs over the fire in the end, because the fire is bounded by the world, while the tablet extends beyond.
