﴾ And from the farthest part of the city a man came running. He said: My people, follow the sent ones. ﴿
After the people's threat a dissenting voice enters: "from the farthest part of the city a man came running." Aqṣā (root q-ṣ-w) is the edge furthest from the centre, so the man comes from the margin, not from the heart of the town where those who deny are gathered. He is referred to as "a man," indefinite, with no name given and no standing mentioned: one individual over against a whole community. "Running" (yasʿā, root s-ʿ-y) denotes a hastening, with effort and purpose, that does not linger: he sensed the danger of the moment and quickened his pace. The scene is of one individual from the edge pressing toward the centre to say a word.
He opened his call with "My people," ascribing them to himself and joining them to his own, and addressed them as a compassionate adviser does, not as an adversary. He then commanded them what is better for them: "follow the sent ones" (t-b-ʿ, walk in their trail, joined to them). He claimed no message for himself; he pointed to the sent ones and referred his people to them, a follower calling to following, a witness from among the people who testifies for the truth. This man is the model of those Allah described at the opening of the sura, "you only warn whoever follows the reminder" (verse 11): one open heart set over against a closed town.
