﴾ And that you serve Me, this is a straight path. ﴿
After the prohibition of serving the Shaytan came the opposite command: "And that you serve Me." So the charge has two halves, a prohibition of obeying the enemy and a command to serve the Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer). Neither is complete except by the other: they are an emptying from the obedience of the Shaytan and an adorning with the service of the All-Merciful. The placing of the prohibition before the command signals that emptying the heart of the enemy's obedience is a condition for filling it with service. The pronoun in "serve Me" directs the service to Him alone, for it is an abasement and compliance fitting none but the One who originated and nurtured.
In "this is a straight path," the pointing with "this" is to the two halves of the charge that preceded. Ṣirāṭ (root ṣ-r-ṭ) is the clear, wide road that delivers its traveller to his end, and mustaqīm (root q-w-m) is upright, with no crookedness nor deviation in it. So the charge was described as a straight path: leaving the Shaytan and serving Allah are the highway that delivers, and whatever lies besides them is wandering and deviation. The singular "a path," not "paths," points to the oneness of the road: guidance is one, and straying is scattered ways. So those who obeyed the Shaytan left the one straight road for the mazes of the enemy.
After the prohibition came the opposite command: "And that you serve Me." So the charge has two halves, an emptying from the obedience of the Shaytan and an adorning with the service of the Rabb, and the placing of the prohibition first signals that the emptying of the heart is the condition of its filling with service. The pronoun in "serve Me" confines the service to Him alone. Then comes "this is a straight path," where the pointing is to the two halves: ṣirāṭ (ṣ-r-ṭ, the clear road that delivers its traveller) and mustaqīm (q-w-m, the upright with no crookedness in it). The singular "a path," not "paths," points to the oneness of the road: guidance is one and straying is scattered ways, so whoever obeyed the Shaytan left the one for the mazes of the enemy.
