﴾ Did I not charge you, O children of Adam, that you not serve the Shaytan, indeed he is to you a manifest enemy? ﴿
"Did I not charge you" is a declarative question that affirms the charge took place and reminds of it. ʿAhd (root ʿ-h-d) is the emphasized injunction that binds the person charged, and it carries the sense of following-up and renewal, like the tending of a thing with care. "O children of Adam" is an address embracing the whole kind: the charge is general in all the offspring of Adam, not singled out to a faction. So the affirmation cuts off the excuse of whoever claims he was not alerted: the charge is a prior covenant, and the reminder of it in this station establishes the proof before the recompense.
The content of the charge is "that you not serve the Shaytan." ʿIbāda (root ʿ-b-d) is the utmost of abasement, compliance and obedience, so serving the Shaytan means obeying him in what he adorns and complying with his command, not prostration to him. So everyone who obeyed his whispering in what Allah forbade has trodden in this forbidden service. He then gave the reason for the prohibition with what discloses its danger: "indeed he is to you a manifest enemy." ʿAduww (root ʿ-d-w) is the transgressing assailant who seeks harm, and mubīn is manifest of enmity, unhidden. So the proof stands: how is an enemy manifest of enmity obeyed? Obeying the enemy who declares his enmity is against reason before it is against the command.
