Commentary
After the two hypothetical powers of blotting and transforming comes a real pattern that they witness: "And whom We grant long life, We reverse him in creation." Taʿmīr (root ʿ-m-r) is the lengthening and extension of a lifespan, and whoever is granted length of life reaches old age. Tankīs (root n-k-s) is the turning of a thing back upon its heel to a former state, from nakasa, to invert a thing and make its top its bottom. The long-lived person is returned in his creation to the weakness of his beginning: after the strength of youth he goes back to the frailty of infancy in body and mind, his frame weakening and failing and his perception diminishing as it was in childhood. Life, on this account, is an arc that ascends and then descends to where it began, a reversal after a raising.
"Will they not then reason?" is a question that rouses their reason by a witness they can see in themselves. ʿAql (root ʿ-q-l) is the restraint and perception that guard against heedlessness. Whoever has seen himself or another reversed after strength has come to know that he is owned and governed and has no hold on the persistence of his strength; how, then, does he behave arrogantly toward his Creator? The One who turns a human being from strength to weakness is able to turn him from life to death, and then to life afterward. The reversal in this world is thereby a present proof of the resurrection they deny: the One who governs this transformation governs what comes after death. The closing of the verse with "will they not then reason" corresponds to the close of "did you not use to reason" (verse 62), a renewed summons to the reason they have left idle.

The reversal is accordingly a present proof of the rising, and the verse's close corresponds to "did you not use to reason" (verse 62).
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as stating that whoever's life is lengthened, Allah returns him to the most abject age so he weakens after strength, proof of His power and that the One who does this is able to raise the dead.
A root-reading
"We grant him long life" (ʿ-m-r), "We reverse him" (n-k-s) turn him upon his heel to the weakness of the beginning: an arc that ascends then descends. And "will they not then reason" (ʿ-q-l): the reversal is a present proof of the rising, the One who turned strength to weakness turns death to life.
A reading that hears in "the reversal" the proof of the rising witnessed in the human's own transformation.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Reflection
The text set before the denier a proof requiring no looking into the heaven nor the graves: his own body. For everyone whose life is lengthened sees in himself an arc ascending from the weakness of infancy to the strength of youth, then descending again to a frailty resembling the beginning. The paradox is that the end mimics the beginning: a hand that struck returns to tremble, a mind that retained returns to forget. So the human carries in his transformation the proof that he does not own himself, and that the strength he boasts of is a loan to be reclaimed.
And this "reversal" is the very thing argued by for the resurrection: the One able to turn the strong weak and return the grown deficient is, all the more, able to bring the dead back living. So the one who disputes the reviving of bones forgets that his body is turned before him every day from state to state, and that the Orderer of this ascending-descending arc is not made incapable by a third stage after death. So life, strength, and weakness are all stations through which the human is moved by another's hand, so why is a fourth station deemed far?
Then the seal comes, "Will they not then reason," returning the matter to the reason that was disabled. And reason, in its origin, is a restraint preventing its owner from rushing into heedlessness. So whoever contemplates the reversal of his lifespan restrains himself from arrogance and from reliance on a fading strength, and knows that the reasoning one is he who reads in his old age the message of a return to the One from whom he began. So the reflection is that a person make his coming weakness a reminder, not a despair: the reversal of the body is a call that the resting-place is not here, and that the arc which descends in this world ascends, with the One who created it, to a life with no reversal after it.
