﴾ and when the one pressed down and held under (al-mawʾūda) is questioned, ﴿
W-ʾ-d is an enclosing that shuts down with weight and then settles and is not lifted. From it comes waʾīd, the heavy sound of what falls and is pressed, and tuʾada, a heaviness in movement with no lightness in it. The material at its base is a pressure that settles, and a hand that is not taken off again.
Al-mawʾūda is a passive participle. There is no name in the word, no lineage, no description of who she is in herself; there is only what was done to her. Where a name is expected, the form of the one acted upon is put: in this line she is known as the one who was shut down upon.
It comes feminine and with the definite article. The feminine is in the structure of the word itself, and the article points to something the listener already knows, which the verse does not explain.
S-ʾ-l is a demand that goes out fine and definite and then attaches to what it is aimed at until an answer is taken from it. From it comes masʾūl, the one to whom the demand is fastened. So a question in its root does not come loose from whoever it is turned toward until it has its answer.
The verb comes on fuʿilat, built for the unnamed agent, so the questioner is not mentioned. And the one to whom the demand is fastened is she: the one pressed down is asked. Here is where this verse must be read exactly.
In the line there are two who are not named: the one who pressed and the one who asks. And there is one who is named, and she is named by the form of what was done to her. The whole sentence runs over her, and she has done nothing.
A question ordinarily turns toward the one who acted. Here it is turned toward the one the act fell upon. That reversal in the direction of the demand is to be read as it stands, with nothing added to it: the one who was given no chance to speak is called to speak.
Then the next verse puts the wording of that demand into it: "for what trailing fault was she killed?" The questioner is not asking after her condition; he is asking after a crime that would account for what was done. Turned toward her, the question does not land on her.
Al-mawʾūda, from w-ʾ-d, is an enclosing that shuts down with weight and settles and is not lifted, whence waʾīd and tuʾada. It comes as a feminine passive participle with the article: known by what was done to her, not by a name and not by a line. Suʾilat, from s-ʾ-l, is a demand that fastens on what it is aimed at until an answer is taken, built for the unnamed agent, so the questioner is left out and the one the demand fastens on is she. Two agents passed over in silence in the line, and one object named. The demand turns toward the one the act fell upon and not toward the one who did it, so the silenced one is called to speak, and the one who pressed is left listening to a question that is not addressed to him and that he does not get out of.
The one named in this line is the one who did nothing, and she is named by what was done to her. The question is put to her, and everyone hearing it knows who has to answer.
