The method

A reading of the Qur’an that listens to the linguistic root

We pause over a word in its verse: how it is formed, how it relates to the words around it, and what its other occurrences help us understand.

Why “the word before the term”?

A familiar word can bring its meaning to mind before we have finished the sentence. We bring that familiarity to the Qur’an too. We recognise a name, a rule or a description, and may miss what the word is doing in this particular verse.

This project invites a slower reading. We examine the word’s root and form, its place in the sentence, and the passage around it. “The word before the term” names that return: giving a word our attention before settling on an inherited definition.

How do we read a word?

We move between three aspects of the text, checking each against the others:

  1. The root and its letters

We identify the root letters and examine their order and semantic contribution within the linguistic framework we use. We also compare related words formed from the same root.

  2. The form and the sentence

We consider what the word’s form adds: who acts, who is affected, and how a change in form alters the relationship. Two words sharing a root can do different work in a sentence.

  3. The verse and other occurrences

We return to the whole sentence and compare passages that share a word or construction. Each occurrence can deepen the reading while retaining its own context.

Take the word taqwā

و ق ي

Our reading connects taqwā with protection. In ittaqā, it considers the act of guarding directed back towards the person who acts: how does someone protect themselves? The verse then helps us ask what they are guarding against, and through what action.

We read ﴿هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ﴾, “guidance for those who guard themselves” (2:2), alongside ﴿لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ﴾, “so that you may guard yourselves,” in the verse on fasting (2:183). The root connects the passages; the sentences show how the word functions in each. The lexicon traces this reading and its evidence in more detail.

What guides the interpretation?

Our analysis of letters and roots draws on Juthoor, a project studying the semantic contribution of Arabic letters, their combinations and the construction of roots. Its framework is set out there; this site applies it to words in Qur’anic context.

We work from the text’s words, grammar and traceable connections between verses. Proper names are also read through their Arabic letters. If a verse leaves someone unnamed or gives no motive for an action, we leave that question open. Comparisons with another language require linguistic evidence; a resemblance in sound is not enough.

We distinguish the words of a verse, what its grammar conveys, and what we infer from the relationships between its words. Each inference needs evidence that a reader can examine. Sharing a root does not make two words synonymous; linking an action to its consequence does not, by itself, explain how that consequence comes about. Where the wording allows more than one reading, we explain the reading proposed here and why we favour it, while keeping a possibility distinct from a conclusion. Reflection explores the connections and questions a verse opens, without claiming to exhaust its meaning.
