﴾ He who roasts in the greatest Fire. ﴿
The root ṣ-l-y turns, in Arabic, on a contact with fire in the manner that goes through the thing. From it ṣalā al-shāta, he roasted the ewe and the fire cooked it through, and iṣṭalā, he came close to the fire to warm himself at it. And the verb in yaṣlā is bare, without doubling, so it names what falls on the agent himself. Not yaṣlī al-nāra, that he would do something to the fire, but yaṣlā al-nāra, that the fire does to him a cooking, a torment.
And the imperfect form names an act renewed in time. The most-wretched does not enter the fire once and then come out, he abides in its roasting. And the verse that follows will uncover this abiding: "Then he neither dies in it, nor lives." The imperfect verb of this verse makes ready, in that one, the denial of both ends of release.
The root k-b-r names a height of standing and the weight of a thing in its own space. And the form al-kubrā is on the feminine elative fuʿlā pattern. That same pattern appeared in al-yusrā in the eighth verse. The Surah, in its building, sets two sides facing each other in the one elative form: a smoothing that comes out at the most-easy, and a keeping-aside that comes out at the most-great.
And to describe the fire as al-kubrā cuts it off from the fires of this world. Fire here goes out: it burns what it touches, then it dies down. The greatest has no going out. And whoever touches it finds, neither in its size nor in its lasting, anything that resembles the fire of this world. The elative in al-kubrā is an elative within the kind: not the greatest of the fires of this world only, but the greatest in the whole figure of fire.
The verse is a description clinging to al-ashqā of the verse before: it opens with the relative alladhī, and what follows is its ṣila. A ṣila in Arabic fixes the relative by a verb attached to it. And al-ashqā has already taken the article, so the relative and its clause add to it what uncovers that fixing. The keeping-aside in this world, and the roasting in the other. The two acts are inseparable.
And the reader, pronouncing the two verses joined, understands that the one who keeps his side away in this world does not slip out of the effect of that keeping. The side he chooses in this abode carries him to a side in the other abode. And whoever took, by his own act, a side that neighbours the fire, took it in two figures: a keeping-aside here, and a roasting there.
This verse fixes the most-wretched by what he comes out at: "He who roasts in the greatest Fire." The relative clause fixes what the name alone does not fix; the most-wretched is described by his act and not by who he is. Yaṣlā, from ṣ-l-y, is a contact with fire that goes through the body: a thing is put to the fire to be cooked through by it or to be tormented in it. The verb, in its form, does not put the most-wretched in the fire only, it hands him over to what the fire does to a body. He does not neighbour it, he touches it. And the imperfect names an act that is renewed, not an event that ends. And al-kubrā, on the feminine elative fuʿlā pattern, answers al-yusrā of the eighth verse: there a road that is the most easy, here a fire that is the most great. Two sides in fuʿlā, each at the end of what it is. The fires of this world beneath it can go out; this one cannot.
