﴾ And the most-wretched will keep his side from it. ﴿
The root j-n-b turns, in Arabic, on the side and on neighbouring. From it al-janb, the flank of the body; al-ajnabī, the one who does not belong to what you belong to. And the pattern of yatajannabu is tafaʿʿala: the agent makes himself take a side other than the side of the thing.
And the verb here is finer than yatruku, to leave, or yuʿriḍu, to turn the face away. Leaving is a heedlessness that may be unintended. Turning the face away is turning it from the thing. Tajannub is the settling of the self on another side by an act that is meant. The most-wretched does not forget the reminder, he chooses to be at a side other than its own. The reminder is cast into a field, and he chooses another field.
The root sh-q-w names, in Arabic, the effort that tires and brings no good. Shaqāʾ is the opposite of saʿāda, but it is not mere sorrow. It is a sorrow joined to fatigue: a person toils, and his toil does not bring what profits. From it the Arabic saying shaqiya fī ḥayātihi, he toiled in his life, said of one who tired himself much and did not reach what he tired himself for.
And the description in the verse is on the elative afʿal pattern: al-ashqā. Not one in hardship, but the most in hardship. The Book is not content to call the one who keeps his side away wretched; it puts him at the furthest of the degrees. For the one who chooses to keep his side away after the reminder has reached him chooses a second fatigue laid on top of his first. The reminder, had he taken it, would have rested his fatigue.
The two successive verses stand in a tightly built couplet. The one before: "He who fears will remember." This one: "And the most-wretched will keep his side from it." The relative man in the first opens the door to everyone who feared. The definite al-ashqā in the second fixes a stance with the last precision. Fear opens, and hardship shuts.
And the two parallel forms likewise each name an act that is meant. Yadhdhakkaru, originally yatadhakkaru, on tafaʿʿala. Yatajannabu, on tafaʿʿala. Both verbs rise from inside the agent. The reminder is not forced on the heart, and the keeping-aside does not fall by chance. Every heart does what lies in its power.
The wāw joins on the facing side: "And the most-wretched will keep his side from it." Yatajannabu, on the yatafaʿʿalu pattern of j-n-b, makes the agent take a side other than the side of the thing, by an act that is meant: it is not the heedlessness of one who did not hear, it is the act of one who turned himself away with effort. Tajannub is finer than leaving and than turning the face away: the most-wretched does not forget the reminder, he chooses to be at a side other than its own. And al-ashqā, from sh-q-w, is on the elative pattern: not merely in hardship, but the most in hardship. Shaqāʾ is the effort that does not bring what it should, the labour that tires and does not fruit. The most-wretched is not at rest, but his fatigue is in a place that bears no fruit. The two sides, in this verse and in the one before, are alike act and will: he who fears remembers by his own act, and he who keeps his side away keeps it away by his own act. Nothing comes down on either of them without a stance of his own.
﴾ Et le plus malheureux s'en écartera. ﴿
