Commentary
The wāw here is that of the oath: it joins this verse to what was sworn by before it, the dawn and ten nights, and then the even and the odd. Al-shafʿ, from sh-f-ʿ, denotes the joining of a thing to its like until the two become a pair, where each was single before. So the shāfiʿ is the one who joins himself to another and strengthens him by that joining, and shufʿa is a neighbour's taking of his neighbour's share to join it to his own. The even, then, is at heart a pairing: a number divisible by two, with no single left outside the pair.
To swear by the even is to swear by gathering and coupling as a state of things: everything in creation is paired with its like or its opposite, as night with day, male with female, beginning with end. The even points to this, that all multiplicity rests on the two-ness by which things stand and through which their standing is brought to completion.
Al-watr, from w-t-r, is the single without a companion, the number that does not divide by two, so that one is left standing on its own. The same root gives al-watīra, a single, unbroken way, and al-muwātara, one thing following another, single after single. The odd is the full opposite of the even: the even joins and the odd sets apart; the even pairs and the odd leaves the one in its oneness.
With the even and the odd joined in a single breath, the division is complete: every number is either even or odd, and there is no third between them. To swear by both is to swear by all counting, by what is paired and what stands alone, so that nothing counted falls outside the two classes. In this place the odd also keeps, behind every pairing, a single origin that is itself unpaired.
The opening of the Surah swears by the dawn and ten nights, then carries the oath on to "the even-paired and the odd-single." The even, from sh-f-ʿ, is the joining of one to its like until the two are paired; the odd, from w-t-r, is the single that remains alone and is not made a pair by a second. Their joining encompasses all counting, what divides by two and what leaves a single over, so nothing counted lies outside the two classes. So the oath takes as its witness the very structure of existence: a multiplicity built on pairing, with an unpaired oneness standing behind it.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"The even and the odd" is taken in many specified senses: the even as the day of sacrifice and the odd as the day of standing, or the even as the whole of creation since it is in pairs and the odd as Allah, the One who has no partner, or the even and the odd as the ritual prayers, those that are by twos and those that are single. All of these are ways of fixing what is sworn by.
A reading that fixes the even and the odd in particular days, creatures, or acts of worship.
A root-reading
Al-shafʿ (root sh-f-ʿ): the joining of a thing to its like until the two pair, a number that divides by two with no single left over. Al-watr (root w-t-r): the single that has no companion, a number that leaves one standing on its own. By their pairing all counting is encompassed, since no number is anything but even or odd. The verse becomes an oath by the very structure of number: what is doubled and what stands alone, with nothing counted falling outside the two.
A reading that hears the oath as covering all counting: a coupling and a singleness, with no third between them.
The two readings do not conflict. The first fixes an instance for the even and the odd; the second hears, in both roots, the shape of coupling and of standing alone. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
Swearing by the even and the odd makes the thing sworn by a division that takes in everything counted: what is doubled and what stands alone. The first striking thing is that the verse names nothing in particular; it swears by the structure on which all things rest, so that what is sworn by becomes more general than any single example offered for it.
Then the pairing of the even with the odd keeps a fine balance: multiplicity stands only through coupling, and coupling itself begins only from a single that is not paired. The odd is prior in rank though later in wording, for every even traces back to a single origin before it.
This connects to what follows in the Surah, the mention of peoples whose forces were gathered and then poured upon with a scourge of punishment: everything that gathers and multiplies remains paired, while what is not paired with any partner is what remains when every coupled thing passes away.
Perhaps in the opposition of the even and the odd there is a hint that much of what is observed in the perceptible world may run on a doubling: two poles in a magnet, two opposing charges, paired chromosomes, a symmetry that scarcely fails any living body. And the odd may, against this, hint at what does not admit of pairing in the origin from which all these pairs issue. We affirm none of this with certainty; it is only a conjecture in reading a structure that the verse pointed to in a summary way.
Tadabbur
