Commentary
The verse opens with the wāw of the oath, which joins one thing sworn by to another: after "the dawn" come "nights." The oath passes from a single daybreak that splits the dark to a counted run of nights that follow one upon another. The nights are left indefinite, layālin, with no title to fix them; they are mentioned by their number and not by a name, and the attention accordingly rests on the count and the succession rather than on a closed identification.
The plural of layla, "night," is layālin, a form that adds to the structure a letter absent from the singular, as if the plural itself lengthened the breath and stretched the shadows. In the Book night is often paired with day as the opposite that completes it; here, however, the oath sets the nights apart on their own, and so they are heard as still and veiled, a time folded over what cannot be seen in the open light of day.
The root of "night," l-y-l, centres on a cover that flows out and extends until it clings to what lies beneath and covers it. Night spreads over the ground as a continuous covering without a visible edge, advancing until it is everywhere. It is a veil that closes over, not a cut that divides: it stills movement, hides the landmarks and defers the unveiling to a coming dawn.
Because the night is a still covering, to swear by it is to swear by a time folded over hidden work: what runs its course in the night runs far from the eye. The counted nights make this covering recur time after time, as though they pointed to a folded span in which something ripens that becomes visible only at its close.
The nights are described as ʿashr, "ten," from the root ʿ-sh-r, whose sense is a gathering that knits together and mingles until it becomes a single whole. The ʿashīra is the kindred, interwoven and mixed with each other; ʿishra is companionship, the close mixing of lives; muʿāshara is the knitting of one life into another. ʿAshr belongs to the same source: a number that gathers its units into one complete knot enclosing them, the first of the tens after the single digits.
So the description of the nights as ten keeps them from being scattered and dispersed and gathers them into a counted unity bounded at both ends: nights that have a beginning and a limit, marked off by a number that encloses them and so makes them a span standing on its own. The oath, then, falls on nights gathered into one complete knot, not on an open, unending night.
The wāw joins a new thing sworn by to "the dawn": "ten nights," left indefinite and mentioned by their number, not by a name. The root l-y-l signifies a cover that flows out and extends until it clings to what is beneath and covers it, so the night is a still veil folded over what is not seen. The root ʿ-sh-r refers to a gathering that knits into one complete, enclosing knot, so the ten gathers the nights into a span bounded at both ends. The verse swears, then, by a time folded and veiled, yet counted and gathered into a complete unity: a covering that recurs a fixed number of times, in which ripens what is uncovered at its close.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"Ten nights" is read in the received tradition as the ten of Dhū al-Ḥijja, or, by others, the first ten of the month of fasting, or otherwise. The oath by them is taken as a magnifying of their merit and of the nearness and worship that fall within them, and their being left undefined is read, on this view, as exaltation rather than vagueness.
A reading that fixes the sworn-by nights in known seasons of the year.
A root-reading
Layālin (root l-y-l): a cover that flows out and extends until it clings to what is beneath and covers it, so night is a still veil that hides the landmarks and defers the unveiling. Its undefined plural keeps the attention on succession and count. 'Ashr (root '-sh-r): a gathering that knits into one complete knot that encloses, so the ten gathers the nights into a span bounded at both ends. The verse becomes: "And I swear by a veiled, folded time, counted and gathered into a complete whole with a beginning and an end."
A reading that hears, in both roots, the folded veil of night and the enclosing knot of number.
The two readings do not conflict. The first fixes the seasons; the second hears, in both roots, the shape of a folded veil and a gathering number. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
The oath moves from the single "daybreak" to a gathered "nights," holding in two breaths a dawn that splits and a time that veils. This very contrast prepares the structure of the whole Surah: generations that came before and then passed, that grew mighty and then were gone, as if the counted nights were a small image of spans that are granted and then run out.
And the undefined "nights" opens onto every veiled, counted span: there is no granted time that does not have two ends, a beginning and a close that a number encloses. The ten is no bare figure but the shape of every appointed term: nights that follow one another under cover, then a close that unveils what was folded within them.
Night, in the root, is a veil folded over hidden work: within it ripens what is not seen, then the dawn comes and lays it bare. The oath by ten nights recalls that the granted respites are veiled and folded, yet counted and bounded, running in concealment toward an unveiling that will surely come.
Perhaps in the joining of "nights" to a bounded number there is a sign that the veiled time itself is counted and measured: the spans folded into the life of a people or the cycle of a matter may be limited by a number they do not exceed, as if every veil had an appointed time known to the One who decreed it. And there may be, in the succession of counted nights, an echo of the regular cycles we know in night and day, running under cover and then reckoned and sealed; but all of this is conjecture, and we halt at its edge.
Tadabbur
