﴾ God lets their mockery return on them: He stretches them out further in their own overreach, wandering blindly inside it. ﴿
The sentence opens with the divine name itself, standing first as the subject of its clause. That lifts the agent into view and signals that the matter has left the scale of one human paying another back. "God lets their mockery return on them" does not mean that God laughs or jeers as they jeer. It means He returns their act upon them in the very structure they built it with: they emptied those who are producing trust of their worth in speech, and now they are emptied, in fact and not in words, of what they were worth and of what held them up. The verb stands in the continuous imperfect, yastahziʾ, not in the perfect: what runs here is a law, not an incident that happened once. That is more exact than picturing a punishment drawn up elsewhere and laid on top of the offence. The reply is fastened to the structure of the act that began it.
Madd, in Arabic, is the lengthening and widening of something after it has begun, never its making out of nothing. So the verse says that God stretches them out in their overreach; it does not say He starts the overreach for them. The overreach is their own choosing, and the stretching is room given to the road they chose. The law in this is a just one: whoever opens himself a door of going past the limit finds the space in front of him standing open, open until he is wandering inside it. And ṭughyān, from ṭ-gh-y, is a going past that carries a person outside the bounds that were keeping him level. The description is structural rather than moral: what is crossed is the inner dam that held the self at its balance.
The verse closes on their condition, "wandering blindly inside it". ʿAmah is not ʿamā. ʿAmā, from ʿ-m-y, is the loss of sight; ʿamah, from ʿ-m-h, is the bewilderment of a walker on a road whose eyes are sound and who does not know where he is walking to. So what is described is not an instrument taken away but a loss inside the use of it: an eye that sees, and a heart that no longer tells the eye where to look. And the sure thing is that this condition is where the act arrives, not where it sets out. Being stretched out inside overreach produces the wandering by itself, the way a river cuts its own channel out of its own slope. The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity.
They said "we are only making fun of them", and the answer came back in the very words they had used: "God lets their mockery return on them". Mockery, from h-z-ʾ, empties what once had weight, so the emptying they worked on those who are producing trust in their private talk returns to them as a real emptying: they are emptied of everything they had held on to. The verb keeps the continuous imperfect, yastahziʾ, because this is a law that runs and not a single occurrence. The second clause sets a scene of three links: a stretching (m-d-d, the lengthening of what has already begun, not a making out of nothing) inside an overreach (ṭ-gh-y, water rising above its limit, the inner dam crossed), so that they wander (ʿ-m-h, the bewilderment of a walker whose eyes are sound and who does not know where he is going). Wandering of this kind is not the loss of the eye (ʿ-m-y) but the cutting of the centre that told the eye its direction, and that is exactly what a long nifāq produces: every scene is seen, and nothing can be arranged out of the scenes into one road. Being stretched out inside overreach produces the wandering out of its own structure, as a river in flood cuts its channel out of its own descent.
