﴾ What is the Striker? ﴿
The form "mā + a definite noun" comes often in the Qurʾān as a focus of magnification. ﴿الْحَاقَّةُ مَا الْحَاقَّةُ﴾ in the Surah al-Ḥāqqa. ﴿وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ﴾ in al-Wāqiʿa. The form is the same: the word is said, then it is asked about, and the listener falls into the gap of what cannot be encompassed.
And the Striker enters this register here. The name, in the first verse, fell upon the ear as a blow; in the second verse it returns as the place of a question. The sound that struck calls the one who listens to ask about it, not to answer. The listener holds no answer about what struck him; he holds only the asking.
And this manner returns in several places in al-Baqara: when what cannot be encompassed occurs, the listener is left between speech and silence. ﴿وَاتَّقُوا يَوْمًا تُرْجَعُونَ فِيهِ إِلَى اللَّهِ﴾, "and guard yourselves against a day in which you are returned to Allāh": it does not say "the day of resurrection" by its name, but "a day," indefinite and made greater by that very indefiniteness. As if the Book knew that some terrors grow more by being asked about than by being told of.
The Striker, in the first verse, struck once. In the second verse it strikes a second time, but in the form of a question. As if the Book did to the listener what the one who knocks does to the door: it does not content itself with a single knock. It knocks once, then waits, then knocks again.
And whoever has heard a knock at the door of his night knows this. The first knock may not be enough to wake the sleeper. The second confirms that what was struck is no dream. And the third, in the next verse, separates the listener from his claim to know. The Striker comes three times before anything of it is uncovered.
The same word returns, but it returns preceded by a question. The first verse struck the ear, and the second strikes it a second time under the figure of an interrogation. In Arabic, when mā enters upon a noun made definite by al-, it does not ask for a definition, it asks for magnification: "what is this thing that has just struck? how is it to be encompassed?" The question is of this second kind. And the form "mā + a definite noun" comes in the Qurʾān as a space opened for dread, as in ﴿الْحَاقَّةُ مَا الْحَاقَّةُ﴾ and ﴿وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ﴾.
And the verse holds the answer back. It opens the question, then does not close it. The listener waits for a clarification, and no clarification comes to him: what comes is a third question, in the next verse. The one who knocks does not content himself with a single knock: he knocks, then waits, then knocks. And the Surah builds the listener's bewilderment layer upon layer. For what will be figured after three verses needs all this preparing if it is to be received at its true size.
And the question that goes unanswered opens in the heart a wider room than any answer opens. The Striker is not defined by a definition, but by the bewilderment itself. This manner is already in al-Baqara: when what cannot be encompassed occurs, the listener is left between speech and silence, as in ﴿وَاتَّقُوا يَوْمًا تُرْجَعُونَ فِيهِ إِلَى اللَّهِ﴾: "a day," indefinite, and not the name of a known day.
﴾ Qu'est-ce que celle qui frappe ? ﴿
