﴾ In a tablet held-in-keeping. ﴿
The tablet, lawḥ, is from l-w-ḥ: the spread and open appearing that takes writing. The lām attaches and draws out, the wāw joins what spreads, and the ḥāʾ contains and draws in. So the lawḥ is what spread until it became a face of reception for what is written on it. And alwāḥ is its plural: what is written on, in stone or in wood, or what rises and stands out.
And in this verse "tablet" is indefinite, yet it is an indefinite qualified by "held-in-keeping", so it comes to be determined by its quality. Not "a tablet among tablets" in the ordinary sense; a tablet with this quality of its own, the kept one. The indefiniteness does not weaken it: it points to its standing in a place that needs no defining supplied by those who describe it.
The keeping is from ḥ-f-ẓ: the ḥāʾ contains, the fāʾ opens and spreads, the ẓāʾ fixes with a heavy pressure. Keeping is therefore a containing that goes into the thing and holds it still with a pressure that bars its wearing away. What is kept is not what was forgotten in a storeroom; it is what was tended and watched over, so that it does not change.
And this answers the burning. In the tenth verse: "the torment of the burning." Fire burns what it reaches. But the gathering vast in amplitude is in a tablet the fire does not reach. What burns is paper and hide; as for what is "in a tablet held-in-keeping", it is outside the reach of burning. The Surah closed on what settles the one who fears for the word: the word is kept.
Three words close the Surah: "In a tablet held-in-keeping." "In" fixes the place where the gathering vast in amplitude resides at its root. The tablet, from l-w-ḥ, is the spread face that receives writing and brings it out: not a store that hides, but a surface that shows to whoever looks. And "held-in-keeping", from ḥ-f-ẓ, is a containing of care, fixed by the pressure of a watching, so that what is kept neither diminishes nor alters: no denial diminishes it, no refusal disfigures it, no burning reaches it. And from here the arc of the Surah completes: it began with a heaven, holder of the visible towers, plain and standing out, and it ends on a tablet held-in-keeping that shelters the substance. What was on high was open to the eye; what is in the tablet is kept for the word. And the denial in which a people settled in the nineteenth verse, and the burning that took place in the trench, do not reach what is in a tablet held-in-keeping. The Surah closes on the safety of the word.
﴾ Sur une planche gardée. ﴿
