﴾ And they resented nothing in them except that they entered trust in Allah, the Unovercome, the Praiseworthy. ﴿
The verse begins with a denial: "And they resented nothing in them." No other cause is found in them. Then "except" comes and brings out the one thing counted against them: that they entered trust. So the verse leaves the one who acts no veil of claim and no veil of justification.
And the construction itself is hard in its justice. Had there been another fault, it would have been named. But the text confines the resentment to the act of trust alone. What they hated in them was the place of their safety, not a place of corruption in them.
Trust, from ʾ-m-n, is a confirmation that brings the heart into safety. It is not a word on the tongue, but the stillness of assurance within. And the verse makes it an act: "that they entered trust." What was resented in them is not a name that is carried, but the movement of entering into that safety.
Then the Name is mentioned, tied to two of His beautiful names: al-ʿAzīz, the Unovercome, and al-Ḥamīd, the Praiseworthy. The Unovercome is not defeated and nothing is wrested from Him. The Praiseworthy deserves praise in Himself. So trust here is not a flight into weakness, but an entering on the side of what cannot be subdued, and to which nothing is ascribed except what deserves praise.
This verse opens the hollow of the act: what did they find against them? It begins with an absolute denial and then brings out the single exception: "And they resented nothing in them except that they entered trust in Allah, the Unovercome, the Praiseworthy." Al-naqm, from n-q-m, is a narrowness that juts out and turns into blame and retaliation; so the verse denies every material for blame and then leaves trust standing alone. And trust, from ʾ-m-n, is the movement of entering a safety and a confirmation in which the heart comes to rest, not a title that is worn. What was taken for a place of defect was in truth the firmest thing in those who carried it. Then come the two descriptions that name Allah: al-ʿAzīz, from ʿ-z-z, the One so firm that He is neither reached nor overcome, and al-Ḥamīd, from ḥ-m-d, the One who deserves praise in Himself. So trust here is not a flight into weakness, but an entering on the side of a strength that cannot be broken. And when the accusation turns over into testimony for the purity of what it aims at, no sound ground is left for resentment.
