Commentary
Two conditions stand at the head of the sentence, and the verse names them together. Āmanū, "they settled into trust," is from the root ʾ-m-n: safety came to rest with them. Ittaqaw, "they held themselves back," is from w-q-y: they kept themselves inside the place of guarding. What is certain is that the verse joins the two, and does not join them by accident. The first is an inner stillness; the second is a discipline of conduct. Without the stillness no discipline holds its ground, and without the discipline the stillness slides off into illusion. The two conditions together make a place, and it is that place a return can reach.
The heart of the sentence is mathūbatun min ʿindi llāhi khayr, "a return from God's side would have been better." Mathūba, from the root th-w-b, is a returning that takes hold: the thawb, the garment, is the weft coming back upon itself pass after pass until the weave settles onto the body. Min ʿindi llāh fixes the side the return issues from. And khayr, "better," is a comparative whose second term is left unsaid: better than that for which they bought themselves. So the verse is not speaking into empty air. It sets one transaction against another: a self sold for a harmful thing, against a standing place that receives a return from the source. The barter is plain enough. Which of the two selves would you rather be?
A reader may take "if only they had known" for a notice served on their ignorance. But the verse just before it said outright wa-laqad ʿalimū, "and they had certainly known." So the phrase carries here the sense of a knowledge that settles, not of a knowledge that passes across the mind. Settled knowledge is the knowledge that turns into an act, because it has become part of where the person stands and not a piece of information lying on the surface of the memory. The complaint is about the kind of knowing, not about whether the knowing was there at all.
So trust and self-restraint are a condition of place for receiving the return from the source; the mathūba is a direct comparison with the transaction in which a self was sold; and "if only they had known" is a complaint about the settling of knowledge, not about its being brought to mind.
The verse arrives after the long transaction of sorcery as a break in the rhythm and not as a consolation: it is the other face of that same transaction. The root ʾ-m-n stands as the first condition: an inner stillness that gathers around a centre of safety and settles into it, and not a spoken assent that crosses the mind without ever being lived in. The root w-q-y comes as a second condition bound to the first: a deep joining to a firm base that stretches out in time; and without the two of them together no place holds still enough for the return to reach it. The shape of the return itself says something: mathūba, from the root th-w-b, a return that comes out at the place where things appear, as a garment comes back to its owner in a fuller form. And the addition "from God's side" carries the reader back to the very source that governed the verse before with "except by God's permission": the permission there holds the harm in check, and the giving here issues from the same side. And the closing "if only they had known" does not complain of a missing knowledge, for the verse before it affirmed "and they had certainly known"; what was missing was the knowledge that settles into its place until it changes the one who carries it, and not the knowledge that crosses the mind and evaporates.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
A lament over the People of the Book: had they believed, they would have received a better reward.
A root-reading
The verse juxtaposes two transactions: selling the self for a harmful item, and the exchange of settlement and self-restraint for a return from the source. The phrase if only they had known is not a complaint about information but about settlement: knowledge was present; what was missing was rest. A reading that moves the verse from generic exhortation into a comparison of two economies.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
"Had they only settled into trust and held themselves back": The condition that closes the arc with its opposite
The verse closes an extended arc starting from 2:75 that exposed the sequence of distortion, concealment, discarding, and following what the devils recited. The conclusion comes with a condition that transfers the reader from the diagnosis of what happened to what ought to have been: ﴿وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ آمَنُوا وَاتَّقَوْا لَمَثُوبَةٌ مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ﴾. The particle law in Arabic is a conditional that implies the non-occurrence of the consequence due to the non-occurrence of the condition. The text establishes the trial with the structure of wishing for what did not happen.
The condition in its phrasing combines faith (īmān) and mindfulness (taqwā). Faith from the root (ʾ-m-n) is the giving of security, and taqwā from the root (w-q-y) is the preservation of the self from harm. Together they form the structure of the appropriate stance. He who accepts the Book after verification has believed (āmana), and he who preserves himself from walking the path of distortion has attained taqwā. The arc in the preceding verses was a revelation of a soul that did neither the first nor the second.
This condition invokes a similar arc in the Quran. The same construction: a condition in the law form, combining faith and taqwā, resulting in a different blessing in the outcome. The law: what follows this condition is better than what the soul acquires by the act it chooses. The condition itself reveals that what the human seeks through distortion and trickery was available to him through uprightness upon the command's source.
"A return from God's side would have been better": The comparison that reveals the loss in the deal
The answer to the condition is a point of contemplation. Mathūbah from the root (th-w-b) denotes the returning of a thing to its owner after he has acted. It is not a reward granted from the outset, but a return of what the doer has done back to him. The verse makes the return "from Allah's side" (min ʿindi llāh), so the Source is the same site from which the soul flees. He who directs his acquisition toward the path of faith and taqwā finds his return from a side greater than what a human can acquire by himself.
The quality of being "better" (khayr) in the answer is an implicit contrast between two returns. He who followed the path of sorcery in 2:102 was seeking a return in this world: a power that distinguishes him, an authority he attains, or success in a relationship. The verse contrasts this sought return with a "better" return. Khayr in its root is that which penetrates to an extended benefit, and the comparison in its form reveals that what the distorter seeks is confined, while what comes to the believer is expansive. The soul in its first deal was seeking the limited in exchange for the unlimited; had it reversed the deal, it would have gained the unlimited through the limited.
The lesson is in the seal of the verse: ﴿لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ﴾ ("if only they had known"). The restriction in law kānū reveals the psychological stance. The Quran does not say "but they do not know," but rather "if only they knew." The subject is connected to knowledge. It is as if the Quran reveals that knowledge itself is what is missing in their psychological account, not the act in the account of destiny. Had they known the truth of the deal, they would not have chosen it. With this conclusion, the Quran returns the reader to his own position: which deal does he choose in his present, and who knows its truth?
Relation to the arc starting from 2:75: Sealing with the same hypothetical logic
The verse in its position in the Surah closes an arc of nearly thirty verses (75-103). The arc began by exposing the structure of distortion, then graduated in presenting its consequences for the individual and the group, reaching its peak in the image of sorcery that separates between a man and his wife. The seal comes with a condition in the law form, revealing that all that preceded was a manifestation of a stance that could have been its opposite. The arc is not an inevitable destiny, but a choice that occurred.
This is a methodological law throughout the Quran. What the text reveals of deterioration or error comes connected to a law construction that reveals the door was open from the beginning. Rejection (kufr) in the Quran is not an inevitable result, but a choice made alongside what opens the door to distinction. In the Surah's logic, everything recounted in the arc, namely breaking the covenant, concealing the Book, discarding it, and following what the devils recited, was at every moment of it invoking a law by which the stance could be reversed.
The conclusion with knowledge "if only they had known" opens onto what follows in the Surah. The next verses 2:104 and beyond will shift to addressing "those who believe." The arc closes upon itself then opens onto a new space. The law: he who reads the warning in the preceding arc and delivers knowledge into action enters the space that precedes the following verses. He who reads it as a history of a group other than his own has repeated in his own image what the text rejected in the image of the described group.
La leçon est dans le sceau du verset : ﴿لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ﴾ (« s'ils avaient su »).
