﴾ They followed what the shayāṭīn recited concerning the kingdom of Solomon. Solomon did not cover over the truth; the shayāṭīn did, teaching people sorcery; and what was sent down on the two functionaries in Babylon, Hārūt and Mārūt. The two would not instruct a single person without first saying: we are a trial, do not cover over the truth. Yet people went on learning from them what drives a man apart from his wife. They do no harm to anyone except by God's permission. They were learning what harms and does not benefit them. And they already knew that whoever buys such a thing has no portion in the life to come. Bad is the price for which they sold themselves, if only they had known. ﴿
"Recited", tatlū, is one text following another, a telling laid along a telling. And the preposition matters here: not "in the kingdom of Solomon" but "upon" it, above the name and hung on it. A venerable name is a platform, and unlicensed goods rent a place on it. The Book separates the platform from the merchandise: "Solomon did not cover over the truth; the shayāṭīn did." Whoever falls to arguing about Solomon has been drawn into a side battle, while the thing itself is a forged chain of attribution.
Covering over, in its root k-f-r, is a covering that hides what lies beneath it, and from it the sower is called a kāfir when he heaps earth over the seed. And a teacher is a door of attribution: he takes you by the hand and shows you where the gift came from. Turn that door on its heel and teaching becomes a covering and not an uncovering, passing the material along and effacing the spring it came from.
Listen to how the word moves three times inside the verse. First as a denial, "Solomon did not cover over the truth": he did not veil the source of his kingship, he left it in the open. Then as an affirmation, "the shayāṭīn did": they are the ones who covered, and under the name of a noble king they passed along what cuts a person off from his Lord. Then as a warning that closes the circle: the two functionaries would not instruct a single person without first saying, "we are a trial, do not cover over the truth", that is, do not bury this warning once you have heard it, and do not strip the material out of the declaration it came wrapped in.
Truthful teaching shows you the spring. Sorcery cuts the wire between you and the spring.
The verb comes back through the verse as if on a single breath: they teach, then they learn, then they knew. Three steps out of one root, going down like a stair. But this stair descends; it does not climb.
The root ʿ-l-m is at origin a mark that points a person to his place: it shows you your drinking place, "every people has known its drinking place", and it sets you straight, "and He teaches you the Book". A knowledge that opens and guides. In the verse of sorcery the axis turns over. "Teaching people sorcery": they stamp into the inward a meaning that severs its owner from people and from himself. "They were learning what harms and does not benefit them": the mark is fixed onto the self against the self, and turns into a wound that grows inside it. Then comes the stroke that breaks the last excuse, "and they already knew that whoever buys such a thing has no portion in the life to come": they know where the road ends, and they walk it.
A knowledge that points you to your place, and a knowledge whose price is paid against your place.
"What was sent down" is a form of permission: a door authorized from the source. But authorized on the condition of a plain declaration, "we are a trial, do not cover over the truth". That sentence is not a moral warning trespassing on the contract; it is the text of the contract. The learner knows that the material is a trial, and that using it outside its condition is a covering over. So the condition is not a cover manufactured and laid on top; it is the very site of the permission. And whoever took the content without its condition took something he was never permitted to take.
It did not say only "they work sorcery"; the effect itself is specified, "what drives a man apart from his wife". A man and his wife are the smallest social unit there is, and it stands on a mutual sakan, a dwelling in which each is at rest in the other. The chief product of this material is the taking apart of the small circles that carry safety. And whoever takes the dwelling apart takes society apart at its base, not at its roof. The diagnosis of the harm here is exact and not general.
Harm happens, and this is not denied. But the place of the last agent is with God. "Except by God's permission" sets every means in its true position: a means conditioned by a permission, not a power standing on its own. And whenever a society forgets this exception, the instrument climbs to the station of the Lord: the worker of sorcery becomes an object of worship, the amulet becomes an origin, the inherited word becomes a decree. The Book returns every one of them to its own door.
"And they already knew that whoever buys such a thing has no portion in the life to come." "They already knew" breaks any plea of ignorance. The loss is known beforehand. Then: "Bad is the price for which they sold themselves." The goods put up in this contract are the self itself, in exchange for a material they know before the purchase to have no share in what comes after. So the buying here is a complete conversion: the self becomes the price, and the harmful material becomes a hallowed commodity. This sale is where the tragedy sits, not the mere obtaining of sorcery.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the forging of a chain of attribution borrows a venerable name in order to pass along harmful material; the condition "we are a trial, do not cover over the truth" is part of the contract and not its ornament; the permission stays with God, so no instrument holds a sovereignty of its own; and the knowing purchase of harmful material is a sale of the self at a price whose loss is already known.
The verse opens by diagnosing the machinery of forgery: the root sh-ṭ-n fixes the harmful forces as forces gone far from the centre that then work their way inward, and they lay their material "upon" the kingdom of Solomon and not "in" his life, borrowing a venerable name as a platform to cross by and not as a content. And the Book cuts that chain with three movements of the root k-f-r: a denial, "Solomon did not cover over the truth", an affirmation, "the shayāṭīn did", then a warning built on the tongue of the two functionaries themselves, "we are a trial, do not cover over the truth". This last sentence is no moral footnote; it is the text of the contract that makes what was sent down in Babylon permitted, and whoever took the material and dropped the warning took something outside the bounds of the permission. Then the root ʿ-l-m moves in three descending steps, "they teach", then "they learn", then "they knew", and it uncovers that a knowledge which does not point you to your place turns against you; indeed they know beforehand that whoever buys this has no portion in the life to come, and the exception, "except by God's permission", shuts the door on any claim to a sovereignty standing alone, for no instrument owns its harm out of itself. And the close, "bad is the price for which they sold themselves", names the kind of transaction: not a purchase of knowledge but a sale of the self in exchange for a material whose owner knew, before the contract was done, that it was a losing one.
