﴾ Say: obey Allah and the Messenger. If they turn away, Allah does not love those who cover. ﴿
Obedience, from ṭ-w-ʿ, is a broad spreading that yields and runs with another along a bounded path, so it is a pliancy by which the one who obeys yields, not an empty movement of the body: the love spoken of before becomes obedience. Joining the Messenger to the name of Allah ties the Source to the declaration He sent out.
The Messenger, from r-s-l, is a flowing that extends and then attaches to its destination. He is the bearer of a channel from the Sender to the one who receives. For this reason the following named in the preceding verse rests on a message tying obedience to Allah, not on a person cut off from the Source.
Turning away, from w-l-y, takes the bond of nearness and then turns it far off. Its answer is "Allah does not love those who cover": turning away describes the place of covering that the act has chosen, and does not fix an everlasting identity. Whoever turned his face from the channel of the message cut the road by which he asked for Allah's love.
The single command carries the name of Allah and the Messenger together, so it does not set up two separate paths for the obedient to choose between. The Source sends, the Messenger carries what was sent, and obedience crosses this connection without shutting the channel up inside its bearer and without seeking the Source while cutting off what He sent. That is why turning away comes after the two names together: it is a turning of the face from the bond in its entirety.
The ending uncovers what happens to love when it is separated from obedience. The preceding verse opened Allah's love as the answer to following; here love is denied at turning away and at covering. The distance between the two statements is a change in the movement of the one who seeks, not in a beloved who is sought: a face that follows and so connects, or a face that turns away and so cuts the channel that was carrying it toward nearness.
Nor does turning away leave the one who turns in a place of neutrality; turning the face from the channel uncovers a covering standing between the person and what he was called to. That is why the ending moves from the act of turning away to the name "those who cover": once the severance settles, it becomes a condition by which the direction is known. Obedience, for its part, keeps the inward open so that it may appear in a connected act.
The passage moves from a love that is claimed to an obedience coming out of the inward, and from following the Messenger to understanding him as the channel of the message. It then places turning away at the opposite end, where turning the face changes nearness into distance, and covering cuts the bond of love that following had opened.
