The word before the term: a reading that begins from the letters, not from what later settled on them.
❋ ❋ ❋
A tested linguistic framework, applied verse by verse.
01 · Why This Book Exists
The word is hidden beneath the term
The Qur'an is Arabic words written to be read. But most readings today skim over the word and rush to the term that settled on it centuries later, a term built up by schools and centuries, which then becomes what is taught to the Muslim as the word's meaning. This book does the opposite: it stops at the word, listens to its letters, before the term arrives with a ready-made answer.
"Taqwā", before it became a juridical term, was four letters spoken: tāʾ, then qāf, then wāw, then yāʾ. The letters themselves reveal the meaning to anyone who listens. That is what we do here.
02 · The Linguistic Foundation
What this work rests on
This book does not invent a new linguistic theory from scratch. It rests on an empirical study of the Arabic tongue that synthesizes seven contemporary Arabic scholarly traditions, tests them against a complete lexicon, and contributes five new structural findings of its own: the universal dual-face structure of letter charges, a 12-mode operative grammar for trilateral roots, and a four-bar rubric for verifying cross-linguistic cognates.
قر = precision that repeats, a settling that returns to itself.
3
Add the remaining letters
Each new letter modifies the nucleus; it does not erase it.
+ أ affirms the precise repetition, + ن announces it outward.
4
Read the literal word
The literal meaning composes upward.
al-Qur'ān = a precise settling that repeats, is affirmed, and is announced outward.
5
Connect to the Qur'anic usage
One sentence linking letter to verse.
This is why it is called al-Qur'ān: a text that settles on itself, repeats on the tongues, is affirmed in the hearts, and is announced openly to the people.
04 · The Disciplines
Five rules that govern every reading
The linguistic framework is given. But applying it to the Qur'an demands disciplines that keep the reader from slipping into a claim the text does not carry. These five:
⊕
The root before the form
We decompose the word to its root charge first, then add what the form (wazn) modifies. The form modulates; it does not create. This blocks hanging the meaning on a form without its root.
∞
Cumulative reading
Each new occurrence of a word adds a charge; it does not cancel earlier ones. Meaning accumulates across the Mushaf, so the word in Fātiḥah carries what its later places added to it.
⊜
Tadabbur, not taʾwīl
We trace what the verse carries with it: patterns, connections, consequences (﴿will they not reflect upon the Qurʾān?﴾, 4:82). But where the verse ultimately lands is its taʾwīl, and ﴿none knows its taʾwīl save God﴾ (3:7). We do not cross that line.
ع
The Qur'an is Arabic
Every word in the Mushaf, including proper names (Ibrāhīm, ʿĪsā, Jibrīl), is read through its Arabic letters. We do not borrow Hebrew or Greek etymologies to explain an Arabic text.
∅
No claim about what was not said
We do not name what the verse did not name, nor extract what the verse did not signify. We say "the root carries", "the context reveals", "the verse bears", not "the verse means" or "the intended sense is".

Arabic readers also see a fourth tab, 🌳 Root Analysis, which is Arabic-only because it depends on the ear of the Arabic tongue.
06 · A Critical Stance
What this book does not claim
It does not claim that common translations are wrong, nor that root-reading is the last word. What it offers is another way of reading.
Nor is this work attached to any school. Reading from the root is a neutral linguistic practice; any reader can review it for themselves: the letters are known and the rules are fixed.
And finally: this book does not quarrel with any traditional understanding, nor call for its rejection. It asks only for a second reading: to take the word again as it was before a term settled over it.
This book is an invitation to listen
Whoever opens the Qur'an for the first time, or has known it for years and wants to read it differently, is welcome here.

The Surah opens with three named letters, not with a complete sentence: Alif, Lām, Mīm. Each is pronounced by its name and remains separate from the next. The ear is stopped at the material of speech before speech begins. What is less than a word becomes the threshold of every word that follows.
These letters do not form a lexical root in this verse, so they are not treated as a word from which a dictionary meaning can be extracted. What can be heard is the ordering of their sounds: the lengthening of Alif, the attachment and extension of Lām, then the gathering closure of Mīm at the lips. This reading does not solve a code. It stays with what pronunciation itself is doing.
Alif is a letter of lengthening and has no composing face in the binding root registry. Lām attaches at its point of articulation and lets the sound flow along it. Mīm closes the lips and gathers the breath inside. Their sequence is therefore audible as a movement: extension, attachment, gathering. That movement reaches the ear from the ordering alone, so what is heard in them is what is read from them.
The next verse begins, "God, there is no god but Him." The connection is one of order, not an imported explanation: letters open, then a statement is built from letters. The reader is asked to hear the instrument of saying before the thing said. Before the structure rises, three of its stones are set before the eye.
The opening does not require a riddle to be solved. It asks for an ear patient enough to hear the letter before a settled term covers it.
Commentaire
﴾ Alif. Lām. Mīm. ﴿
Two Readings
Common reading
Alif Lām Mīm is commonly carried over by the names of its letters. It is counted among the disjoined letters whose intended meaning is entrusted to God, so translations preserve the sound without assigning a meaning.
A reading that preserves the opening as given and leaves what it does not state undetermined.
A root-reading
Alif Lām Mīm is not a lexical root in this verse, so no imagined word is derived from it. Its sound can still be heard: Alif lengthens, Lām attaches and flows, Mīm closes and gathers. The letters do not supply a definition. They prepare the ear for the speech built after them.
A reading that distinguishes listening to sound from claiming to decode a sign the verse itself does not define.
The two readings do not conflict. The first declines to fix an intended meaning; the second hears what pronunciation does without turning it into an inherited definition. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
﴾ God, there is no god but Him, the Living, the One who upholds all. ﴿
The sentence begins with the name "God," then opens a field of negation: lā ilāha, "there is no god." The Arabic construction does not remove one particular object of worship while leaving others. It empties the whole class. The exception, "but Him," then returns the act of turning to one. The grammatical movement is exact: clearing, then affirmation.
Ilāh, from the root ʾ-l-h, carries a direction of intent that attaches and takes hold of its place. The verse is not listing competing names. It cuts attachment away from everything except "Him." The pronoun does not add another title. It brings the remaining presence nearer than a title could.
What remains is named al-Ḥayy, "the Living." The root ḥ-y-y carries a life that passes through and continues, not a still form waiting for another to animate it. The definite form does not present one example of life among others. It sets living as His own abiding attribute. What lives by itself does not borrow its breath.
Then comes al-Qayyūm, from q-w-m, on a form of sustained intensity. It is not one who stands for a moment and then sits, but the One whose standing does not cease and by whose standing all else is held. This is why it follows "the Living": life that needs no giver, and sustaining that leaves nothing it has raised unsupported.
Negation removes every rival, living removes every trace of borrowed breath, and sustaining removes every need for support. What remains is the One on whom all remaining things stand.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is commonly read as a declaration of divine unity and divine names: none is rightfully worshipped but Him, the Living who does not die, the Self-Standing who sustains all others.
A reading that gathers the negation and the names into the doctrine of oneness and permanence.
A root-reading
"There is no god" empties the whole class of attachment, and "but Him" leaves one direction. Al-Ḥayy (root ḥ-y-y) is life passing through without being borrowed. Al-Qayyūm (root q-w-m) is an intensified, connected standing that gathers and upholds what stands. The verse does not merely name the One. It makes that oneness a life without need and a standing that carries.
A reading that hears, in the order of negation and the two names, a movement from clearing the field to sustaining what is in it.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names the doctrinal content; the second shows how the negative construction and the roots of living and standing build it. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
﴾ He brought the Book down upon you with the truth, confirming what lies between its hands, and He sent down the Tawrāt and the Injīl. ﴿
The verb nazzala, "brought down," is built on the root n-z-l. The doubled middle consonant intensifies the movement of descent. The verse does not say merely that the Book appeared. It gives it a direction from above to an addressee: "upon you." The preposition makes the one addressed the place of arrival and bearing. What descends upon a person does not simply pass beside them.
Later in the same verse comes anzala, "sent down," for the two writings named at its close. Both verbs share one root. The first form intensifies the event of descent, while the second states the causing of arrival from above. The verse itself gathers all three named writings under one act of sending down, and what separates them within it remains a difference of verbal form inside a single event.
Al-kitāb, "the Book," comes from k-t-b: meaning held, completed, and bound part to part. It arrives not as passing speech but as something carried in a fixed form that can be kept. The phrase bi-l-ḥaqq, "with the truth," attaches truth to the descent. Truth is not decoration added afterward. It accompanies the coming down itself.
Ḥaqq, from ḥ-q-q, is what is contained, fastened in depth, and brought to a decisive close. Here truth is what holds firm rather than turning with the observer. The Book descends, but does not scatter on the way, because truth accompanies it like a door set exactly on its hinge.
Muṣaddiqan, "confirming," describes the Book in the very state of its descent. The root ṣ-d-q gathers solid closure, fixed pressure, and a decisive release. Confirmation is therefore an act that secures a relation. What is "between its hands" stands present before the Book, within reach, not as a distant report. The descending Book does not sever what is before it. It meets it by making the connection firm.
Everything in the verse moves toward arrival: descent, truth accompanying it, earlier writings held before it, and confirmation fastening the relation. What comes from one source does not need to cut its own threads.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is commonly rendered as God revealing the true Book to the one addressed, confirming earlier scriptures, after having sent down the Torah and the Gospel.
A reading centred on the single source of the writings and the later one's confirmation of the earlier.
A root-reading
Nazzala (root n-z-l) is a penetrating movement of emergence that attaches to its place of arrival. Kitāb (root k-t-b) is meaning held, completed, and bound. Ḥaqq (root ḥ-q-q) is a fastened firmness that does not come loose. The Book descends while muṣaddiqan (root ṣ-d-q), securing its bond with what stands between its hands. Descent here is an arrival carrying its own firmness and relation.
A reading that hears sending down as a path of arrival, truth as fastening, and confirmation as binding rather than mere sequence.
The two readings do not conflict. The first presents the relation among the writings; the second draws from the verbs and roots the shape of that relation as it descends and holds firm. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
