﴾ Allah chose and refined Adam, Noah, the house of Abraham, and the house of Imran above all realms. ﴿
The emphatic particle fixes the agent before the names: Allah is the One who chose. The term iṣṭifāʾ, from ṣ-f-w, denotes a firmness that penetrates and divides, and then joins what has come out clear. The iftiʿāl form shows a work that draws the clear out from among all that is not it.
The conjunctions gather two single names and two houses. Āl, the house, from ʾ-w-l, is the return of a thing, after it has stretched out, to what it ends at and hangs upon, a house whose branches go back to one origin. Joining them by conjunction sets both within a single current of choosing, without levelling the individual and the group in form.
The realms, from ʿ-l-m, are what appears out of depth and extends until it gathers into a sign. "Above" raises those chosen to a place among the realms; it does not set them outside creation. Choosing is therefore a task of distinction carried out inside the gathering scene.
The list does not run in a single form: it begins with Adam and Noah, two single names, and then moves to the house of Abraham and the house of Imran. That movement, from the single name to the house that extends, lets choosing touch a person where he stands and lets it run on through a house whose parts follow one after another. Yet the conjunction does not say that every one within the extension has become a copy of the first name. It gathers the names and the houses alike beneath the act of Allah with which the verse began.
Choosing is therefore carried from its Source and not from a house's claim on its own behalf. Allah is the One who chose, and the realms are the field in which that choosing appears. What extends through a house still needs to be heard and known in each of its parts, as the verse that follows joins offspring to hearing and to knowledge. Extension carries the trust forward without wresting the act of choosing away from the One whose act it is.
The passage from the single name to the house draws two movements of choosing: a beginning that stands in one person, and an extension that carries the trace across parts following one after another. The extension does not make the beginning unnecessary, and the beginning does not shut the trust up inside the one who bore it. What is refined thus stays a gift that joins and that lays a weight upon its bearers, not a title that closes a house upon its own glory.
Choosing begins from Allah's own act, then passes through individuals and through houses, joining the person to the extension without shutting the gift inside a single moment. The choosing of a house shows that what is refined may carry a responsibility across succession, while "above all realms" keeps choosing a service set within a wider world.
