﴾ He will be in a contented living. ﴿
The root ʿ-y-sh turns on a life held up by some watering. A person's ʿaysh is what he lives by: his food, his drink, his shelter. And ʿīsha is the form of the single occurrence, ṣīghat al-marra: a life in its own particular shape, a life marked off by a character that belongs to it alone.
And the Book chooses ʿīsha and not ḥayāt, because ḥayāt is a general word, an abstract one. ʿĪsha is a shape that has passed through the mind with a taste and a picture. Whoever said here that he lives a sweet ʿīsha meant a life whose flavour he can call up. And the verse says: yours is a contented living. Not life in the bare sense, but the shape of a life with a taste that can be named.
The root r-ḍ-y in Arabic is the root of settling upon acceptance. Riḍā is not an acceptance in passing, but an acceptance that settles and turns into a state. A person is said to have accepted a thing when his heart has knotted on it and seeks no substitute for it. And riḍā in the Qur'an is a matter held between two sides: ﴿رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ﴾.
And the form here, rāḍiya, is an active participle. The participle assigns the act to what it qualifies: "the living is rāḍiya" means the living is the one that does the accepting. And this assigning has two faces. One reading takes it as a figure standing for marḍiyya, the living that its dweller accepts. Another takes it on its face: the living itself is contented, that is, it has reached such breadth and such watering that it is content with itself and asks for no increase.
And the second sense is the more exact one in picturing the Garden. Every life here asks for a completion: incomplete, it seeks its own wholeness, and the one who lives it pours his effort into it so as to be content with it. Life in the Garden is otherwise: whole in itself, and so contented with itself. It lacks nothing its dweller would ask for, and adds nothing he would find too much.
Fa-huwa in the verse follows on thaqulat. The fāʾ is the fāʾ of branching: the one whose weighings grew heavy, what branches from him is that he be in a contented living. No gap between the balance and the living. The balance in his pan on the Day of the Striker is the very thing the shape of his coming life is built upon.
And in this fāʾ there is a quiet fairness: whoever spent his lifetime making his weighings heavy with small truthful acts has earned a contented living that rises of itself, needing no correction from him. What he built here as heaviness turns over, there, into a lightness tied to acceptance. And in al-Fātiḥa itself it was said: ﴿صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ﴾. Those upon whom the favour came are the ones upon whom the contented living rises. Al-Fātiḥa points them out; the Striker shows them.
The answer comes brief. The one whose weighings grew heavy is in a contented living. No description of the bliss by its images, no palaces and no rivers. Two words are enough. And there is an eloquence in that: what is too great to be encompassed by description is not described in detail, it is pointed to by a name that gathers.
And al-ʿīsha, from the root ʿ-y-sh, is the form of the single occurrence: not a life in the abstract, but the shape of a life with a taste that can be named and a character of its own. And the root r-ḍ-y turns on settling upon acceptance: a person has accepted a thing when his heart has knotted on it and seeks no substitute. And rāḍiya is an active participle assigning the accepting to the living itself: the life is the one that does the accepting. The sense is not "in a living he is content with," but in a living that itself is content. Whole in itself, lacking nothing its dweller would ask for.
And the facing image from this life is plain. Here a person looks for something to be content with, it comes to him, and then he wearies of it. The life of this world is not content with itself; it asks for a completion that never arrives. And the Qur'an gathers the acceptance held between two sides in another place: ﴿رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ﴾. And the contented living is the reflection of that mutual acceptance in the very weave of the life.
﴾ Il sera dans une vie satisfaite. ﴿
Et le riḍā, dans le Livre, est chose réciproque : ﴿رَّضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ﴾.
