Commentary
"The One who made for you, from the green tree, fire" brings the opposite out of its opposite, in another likeness that brings near the power of giving life. Shajar (root sh-j-r) is the plant with a stalk whose branches interlace, and akhḍar (root kh-ḍ-r) denotes what is growing and moist, filled with water. He thus gathered the utmost of moistness, the green, with the utmost of dryness and heat, the fire: out of the moist branch He brought the fire that stands against water and against greenness. The wonder lies in bringing a thing out of what contradicts it: a fire hidden in a twig that drips with water, and its moisture does not put it out. So the One who laid fire away inside the green is able to lay life away inside the decayed bone; the giving of life and the bringing out from the opposite are one door of power.
"And at once from it you kindle" names a blessing their own hands take up. "At once" renders the particle of suddenness, which brings out the surprise of the green turning into a fire that is taken up. Īqād (root w-q-d) is the lighting and feeding of a fire so that it may be turned to use. So the fire brought out of the tree is a blessing they benefit from, not a bare wonder to be gazed at: from it they kindle for their cooking and their warmth. The proof and the blessing come together here, as in the verse of the grain and the fruit (verses 33-35): the One who brought out for you the fire from the greenness is the One who gives life to the bones out of decay, and the sign you dispute over is one whose blessing you warm yourselves at every day.

Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as proof of Allah's power: He brought fire out of the moist green tree, so the One able for that is able to give life to the bones, and it is a blessing they kindle from.
A root-reading
"Green" (kh-ḍ-r) is the moist, filled with water, and "fire" is its opposite: the bringing-out of a thing from its contrary. So whoever deposited fire in the green deposits life in the decayed. And "you kindle" (w-q-d): a proof and a blessing together, like the verse of grain (verse 33).
A reading that hears in bringing fire from the green the counterpart of bringing life from decay.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Reflection
The text chose for the proof of the rising the most wondrous thing in the human's daily experience: the fire he extracts from the moist green branch. For water extinguishes fire, and greenness is the badge of moisture, and yet the fire lies hidden in the heart of the twig pulsing with water, so that when it is rubbed it comes out. And this adjacency of the two opposites, water and fire in one branch, is the very thing that brings the rising near: the One who gathered the two contraries in one place is not made incapable of gathering life in the bone after death.
The subtler site of reflection is that the denier reasoned from the surface of things: the bone is worn so there is no life in it, as the onlooker supposes the green is moist so there is no fire in it. And the verse discloses the error of reasoning from the surface: what seems extinguished may hold the most intense burning, and what seems dead may hold the root of life. So the surface does not encompass what the Creator deposited in the interior of things, and judging impossibility based on the surface is an ignorance of what lies beneath it.
Then the verse does not stop at the wonder but ties it to the blessing: "and at once from it you kindle." So the human warms himself and cooks by a fire that is itself the proof of his rising, without noticing. And this is the sura's habit: it sets the signs of power in the form of familiar blessings benefited from and so overlooked. So the reflection is that a person see in every flame he kindles a reminder that the One who brings fire from greenness is able to bring him out of his grave, and that the blessing before him is a proof against him if he is heedless of it.
