﴾ And We made a lamp that blazes out (sirāj wahhāj). ﴿
The verb returns to "We made" after "We built," but it does not return as it was. In the earlier verses there were two objects: a known holder, and a function set into it. Here there is one object and no more.
And that one is, along with this, indefinite. The night was made definite and the daylight was made definite, because the hearer knows them and can be pointed at them with the article. This one comes without it: "a lamp." So the hearer is not told what it is. He is told what it does.
S-r-j is a running that follows on itself and bursts out, coming forth and being uncovered. A lamp is what is kindled so that light issues from it continuously and by it what surrounds it appears.
And the name itself drags a place along with it. Nothing is called a lamp except in relation to a space it lights: a lamp in open country is idle, a lamp in a house is of use. And the verse that built a roof over them came just before, so the name arrives in its place: hung under what was built above their heads.
W-h-j is an enclosure that empties out what is in its hollow so that it bursts forth into view. A blaze is therefore not a gleam on a surface but the coming out of what is within to the open, with nothing held back.
And wahhāj is built on the pattern faʿʿāl, the form for what an act has fastened onto so that it never leaves it. It is not said that it once gave light; the giving-out is its standing description. And this is the first closing word in these verses to arrive in the intensive form, and its sister follows in the verse after: the rhyme changed when what is named changed, for the earlier names were names of things that settle, and these forms are for what works and does not stop.
The verb comes back to "We made" and its structure changes: one indefinite object after two objects and a definite one. There is no holder here to be set into, only a made thing mentioned by its work. It is named a lamp, and the name calls for a house to be lit, and the roof was built in the verse before. Then it is described as blazing: an enclosure that empties its hollow so that what is inside comes out, on a pattern that fastens the act to it so that it never comes loose. A roof drawn tight above you, and under it a lamp that never stops giving out what is in its hollow.
The verse gives no name and no article, only a function and a form that will not let the function go. A lamp is a thing named after the room it serves.
