Commentary
The three verses before this ran on "We made," and here the pattern breaks off all at once into "We built." This change is not a variation of wording.
To make is to draw a thing into a holder that already stands and fasten it there: sleep, night and daylight each already stood, and into each was set what it requires. The root b-n-y, by contrast, denotes a holding that follows on itself in a gliding stretch, as when one brick clings to its fellow and the two rise together, then a third and a fourth. Making sets something into what already stands; building raises something out of parts until it stands.
In place of "above the earth" or "on high," the verse says "above you," returning the direction to the pronoun of those addressed, the one the list last carried in ﴿وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا﴾, "and We set your sleep down as a halting of what runs (subāt)."
The root f-w-q denotes a thing that moves away from what was with it and is cut off from it, so that it passes beyond its limit. Aboveness is accordingly an edge that severs and passes beyond: what is built does not touch the one addressed. The whole list is measured from where he stands, with a bedding beneath him, a sleep within him and a building over him.
What deserves attention here is what is absent from the verse. The number came, and its description came, and the thing counted did not: "seven," then "tight-drawn," with no noun between them or after them. The tally is stated and the naming is left aside.
The root s-b-ʿ denotes a stretch that opens out and comes forth, then surfaces from its depth. Sh-d-d is the gathering of what was spreading into a grip that holds firm and does not slacken, and the doubling of its letter doubles the firmness. What is built over them is therefore drawn tight rather than left slack, gathered rather than scattered; it is described by what it does and is not named by what it is.
The verb moves from setting to raising: into what already stood something is set, while what is over them is built, brick upon brick, until it settles. The direction is then referred to the one addressed himself rather than to the ground, in "above you," an edge that rises and so stands apart from whoever is beneath it, passing beyond them. After that the number is given bare of the thing counted: seven, with no statement of what they are, described as tight-drawn, gathered into a grip that does not slacken. The verse thus counts without naming and describes the firmness without the thing made firm, raising over him a building whose number and tightness are known and whose name is not.
Commentaire
وتُترجَمُ: «And We constructed above you seven strong [heavens]».
Two Readings
Common reading
The omitted counted noun is supplied and the verse is read as "and We built above you seven strong heavens," joined to other places in the Book that name the heavens as seven. "Tight-drawn" is read as the strength and soundness of that building, such that it neither splits nor falls. Rendered: "And We constructed above you seven strong [heavens]."
A reading that identifies the omitted counted noun and completes the wording with it.
A root-reading
Banaynā (b-n-y): a holding that follows on itself in a gliding stretch, parts raised and clinging one to another until they stand; and it is not the "We made" that preceded it, which was a setting into what already stood. Fawqakum (f-w-q): a thing that moves away from what was with it and is cut off from it, passing beyond its limit, with the direction referred to the addressee and not to the earth. Sabʿan is a number with no counted noun stated. Shidād (sh-d-d): the gathering of what was spreading into a grip that holds and does not slacken. The verse becomes: something built, counted and drawn tight over the heads of those addressed, described by its firmness and left unnamed.
A reading that halts at the bare number, counts what was counted, and does not name what was not named.
The two readings do not conflict. The first supplies and identifies what was left out; the second stops at the number and the description the wording actually speaks. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
On traduit : « And We constructed above you seven strong [heavens]. »
Tadabbur
The verse's silence about the counted thing is not a lack in it. Had the counted thing been named, the mind would have turned to picturing it, and the report would have become a report about a shape one imagines. The number was given and the description was given, so the report stays a report about a firm making with a countable number of courses.
And the description itself is not of beauty, nor of vastness. "Tight-drawn" says that what is over them is gathered into a grip that does not slacken. A thing is drawn tight because there is a load upon it or a dweller beneath it. The dweller here is stated outright: "above you."
The picture is completed by where the verse falls in the list. Everything before it is worn close to the human being: ground under his foot, a cut in his sleep, a robe the night puts on him, a field in which his daytime errand spreads out. Then this one arrives, and it rises over him and does not touch him.
Perhaps in leaving the counted thing unsaid there is room for more than one instance. People in every age have raised their eyes and ordered what is above them into courses, and their courses differed with how far their looking reached. Those who study today the air that lies against the earth describe it as distinct bands rising one over another, and report that what shields the ground from what pours down on it is those bands in their cohesion. Perhaps that is one instance of the tightness the verse describes. This is a speculation offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse said only "seven, tight-drawn ones," named no counted thing, and settled nothing about the make-up of what is over us.
