Commentary
Three verbs run through this list: We made, We built, We sent down. Each verb has its own labour: a setting into a holder that already stands, a raising out of parts, and a bringing down from a height to what lies below.
And n-z-l is an emission that pierces sharply, then attaches to its place and takes possession of it. In the root, coming down is not a falling with no direction but an arrival that ends at a place it holds to. And anzalnā is on the pattern afʿala, and the letter at its head shifts the act away from the thing that descends: the water does not drop of itself; it is brought down.
This is the second time in three verses that a thing is described and not named. There a number and a description came with no counted noun; here an active participle comes with no noun it describes. Al-muʿṣirāt is a definite feminine plural, the active participle of aʿṣara: those that have reached their pressing, or have taken to it.
And ʿ-ṣ-r is a grip that closes in a hard clamp that holds, and then runs, so that what was held comes out. Pressing is the bringing out of what is in the hollow by squeezing it, not a pouring from an open jar. And they are named by their act and not by themselves, so the name stays open to whatever the pressing truly fits.
"Water" is indefinite, and by it the whole kind is meant. And m-w-h is a drawn-together thing, joined, that slips loose and runs: held when it is held, flowing when it is released. And it is the fittest of all things to be brought out by pressing, since it takes a grip and does not settle in it.
And th-j-j is an abundant running that gathers to one outfall and then bursts out in succession. And thajjāj is on the pattern faʿʿāl, the second closing word in the intensive after wahhāj. So the two closing words together say one thing: what is in the hollow does not stay in the hollow. Embers that empty out their heat, and a pressed thing that empties out its water.
The verb changes a third time: after the setting and the raising comes a bringing. Anzalnā is on afʿala, so the water is carried in its descent rather than descending by itself, and n-z-l is itself an arrival that fastens onto its place. Then the source is named by a participle and not by a noun of substance, "the pressing ones," and pressing is the bringing out of what is held by squeezing. Then what comes out is named indefinitely, "water," which in its root is what is penned in and then runs, and its description is thajjāj, a heavy pouring that follows on itself. The whole verse is the motion of an inside coming out: it is squeezed and it opens, it is brought down and it arrives. And it describes the presser by its pressing, and never tells you what it is.
Twice in three verses the verse gives the act and withholds the name. Here it says who presses only by saying that they press.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Al-muʿṣirāt is identified with the clouds that have come to their raining, or with the winds that press those clouds, and min is read as marking the starting point on the first identification and the cause on the second. Thajjāj is read as the force and the abundance of the downpour. Rendered: "And We sent down from the rain clouds pouring water."
A reading that fixes what al-muʿṣirāt refers to and chooses between the two candidates.
A root-reading
Anzalnā (n-z-l): an emission that pierces and attaches to its place, and the fourth form makes the descending thing carried rather than falling by itself. Al-muʿṣirāt is an active participle of the fourth form with no noun stated for it to describe, and ʿ-ṣ-r is a grip that clamps hard and holds, then runs so that what was held comes out; the naming falls on the act and not on the substance. Māʾ (m-w-h) is indefinite, meaning the kind: a drawn-together, joined thing that slips loose and runs. Thajjāj (th-j-j) is on the intensive pattern: an abundant pouring that gathers and then bursts out again and again. The verse becomes: the squeezing out of what was held, and its delivery to its place, with the presser described by its pressing and left unnamed.
A reading that halts at the participle, reads the act of pressing, and leaves the referent open.
The two readings do not conflict. The first settles the referent; the second stops at the act the wording ascribes. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
On traduit : « And We sent down from the rain clouds pouring water. »
Tadabbur
Three consecutive verses describe and do not name: seven, with no word for what they are; a lamp, with no word for what it is; pressing ones, with no word for what they are. The higher above the addressee the thing mentioned stands, the less naming there is and the more description. What is under the foot and inside the body was called by its name; what is over the head was mentioned by its act.
That choice has an effect on the reader. Whoever is given a name rests in the name and stops at it; whoever is given a thing by its work keeps his looking open to everything that does that work. The verse chose to keep the looking open.
And pressing is itself an image that says something about giving. What is pressed comes out only under a squeeze upon it, and it gives only what was penned in its hollow. The water that comes down is therefore not a surplus running over the brim. It is drawn out of a holding.
Perhaps in leaving the described thing unsaid there is room for more than one instance. People in every land have tied what gathers above them to what comes down on them, and their accounts of what gathers have differed. Those who study today the paths of water speak of a circuit in which water rises unseen from the surfaces of the earth, gathers on high until it grows heavy, and then returns as a pouring; and they describe that last coming-out as not occurring until what has gathered reaches a limit past which it can hold no more. Perhaps that is one instance of a source named by pressing rather than by pouring. This is a speculation offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse said only "the pressing ones" and "water pouring in torrents," identified nothing described, and settled nothing about the paths of water.
