﴾ Out of which thing (shayʾ) did He shape him? ﴿
After the sentence comes a question, and it is a question narrowed to one direction. It does not ask who shaped, nor why he was shaped. It asks what he was begun from. The min at its head looks to the first material.
Ayy asks for one determined item out of a set already present. The question therefore takes for granted that there were many things a beginning could have been made from, and then asks which one it was. Nor is its answer kept waiting: it lands in the line that follows.
Shayʾ is the widest word available for pointing at what exists. The root sh-y-ʾ is a piercing flow that runs out in all directions until one edge of it is cut off and made to stand. A thing, in its structure, is what has been made determinate out of what has not yet been.
And it comes indefinite, governed by ayy. So the question holds the field open to its farthest limit and then asks for a single point inside it. The width of the word is what makes the answer heavy when it comes: every thing was possible, and the choice fell on the least of them.
In "He shaped him" the agent is carried inside the verb and not spoken, and the pronoun goes back to the human being on whom the cutting and the wondering fell a line ago. He is the one acted upon for a third time, still in his place: things are done to him, and he does not act.
The root kh-l-q is a piercing that goes through, then clings to what it has entered and takes hold of it, and is then sealed by a cut that fixes the edge. Arabic uses it for the leather-worker who measures the hide before he cuts it. Measure is hidden inside the verb before it is ever stated, and asking after the material is asking what that measuring fell upon.
A question that follows a sentence and takes one direction only out of all the directions a question could take. Min is the particle of beginning and looks to the material; ayy asks for one determined item out of a set; and shayʾ (sh-y-ʾ) is a flow from which one edge is cut off and made to stand, coming indefinite so that the field keeps its full width. Then "He shaped him" (kh-l-q) is a piercing that takes hold of a form and then cuts its edge, so the measuring is inside the verb before it is stated after it, its agent carried unspoken within it and its pronoun going back to the kind that was sentenced. A verse that asks after no maker and after no cause, but turns the eye toward what a beginning was made from.
﴾ De quelle chose (shayʾ) l'a-t-il façonné ? ﴿
