Commentary
The wāw at the head of "By the sun" is not the wāw of joining but the wāw of the oath. It draws what follows under it, and it sets the listener on a threshold, waiting for the answer that must come after it: upon what did the speaker swear by the sun? The Surah will leave that waiting suspended for seven verses, until the answer of the oath arrives in "prosperous is he who purifies it." The reader enters an open ring and walks seven steps inside it before the fence closes.
And the sun here is made definite by al, not an indefinite "a sun." It is as though the listener ought to know her before she is named. Every human being on the face of the earth knows the sun with no definition given, and the verse leans on that first knowledge lodged in every soul, calling it up in order to build upon it.
Ḍuḥā is a time, but it is also light in a state of spreading. The sun at her ḍuḥā has not yet reached the middle of the sky, nor does she stand at any edge of the horizon. She is in ascent. And because the ḍuḥā is annexed to her by her own pronoun, the verse is not speaking of bare time but of her own forenoon: what issues out of her and spreads across the face of the earth.
And the reader who pronounces wa-sh-shamsi wa-ḍuḥāhā feels something of that spreading in his own mouth. The shīn pierces through between the teeth, the mīm closes the lips, then the forenoon comes and the mouth opens on the long ḥā, as though the mouth itself were spreading in the sound of spreading.
And the Surah will climb by degrees through its oaths after this, and every oath will bring with it an act issuing out of the very body sworn by. It is as though the cosmos in this Surah did not stand upon still essences at all, but upon what those essences send forth in an act that does not stop.
The wāw of the oath in "By the sun" throws the listener into an open waiting: seven oaths will pass before its answer comes down in "prosperous is he who purifies it." The root sh-m-s is a spreading that pierces out from a tightly gathered focus, and the root ḍ-ḥ-w a hot spreading that settles level upon a surface. The sun, made definite by al, is known to every soul, yet the oath does not fall upon her as a still body but upon her own forenoon-flare: the spreading that issues from her and lays the earth bare. This pattern, a body coupled with an act that issues from it, will repeat through the remaining oaths until it comes down upon the soul itself in the seventh verse.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
"By the sun and its brightness" or "by the sun and its morning light", read as an oath sworn upon two cosmic phenomena: the sun and the time of forenoon when its light is high. The oath opens the Surah; its complement arrives later.
A reading that holds the sun and the forenoon as two distinct things, one a body and one a time.
A root-reading
Al-shams (root sh-m-s): the radiating body whose light pierces and spreads. Ḍuḥāhā (root ḍ-ḥ-w) with the suffix -hā attaching it to the sun: not a time-segment beside her, but what issues out of her across the surface of the earth at full forenoon. The pronoun makes the verb belong to the body: her spreading-light. So the oath is not on two things but on one thing in its action. This pattern will repeat throughout the Surah: every sworn-by item is a body coupled with a verb pouring out of it.
A reading that hears the -hā as a possessive of action, the sun's own outpouring of light, not a separable forenoon-hour.
The two readings do not conflict. The first holds the oath as two phenomena; the second hears one body in its act. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
The pattern of the seven oaths: cosmic things ending in the soul
The Surah opens with seven successive oaths, each following one structure: a body, then a verb attached to it. "By the sun and her forenoon, by the moon when it follows her, by the day when it unveils her, by the night when it covers her, by the heaven and what built it, by the earth and what laid it out, by a soul and what shaped it" (91:1-7). Six cosmic things, and then the seventh descends onto the soul itself.
The rule: what is done to the cosmos is done to the soul. The sun gave her forenoon; the moon followed; the day unveiled; the night covered; the heaven was built; the earth was laid out, all are acts latent in bodies and then issued out of them. And so the soul: "and inspired it with its waywardness and its mindfulness" (91:8), within it are fujūr and taqwā, both proceeding from it by one of two acts. The Surah founds a parallel: the soul is a small cosmos with its own sun, moon, night, day, and with its own fujūr and taqwā. To purify it is to let its sun rise to its forenoon.
The law of alternation: opposites that do not war
The cosmic things in the Surah are arranged in complementary opposites: sun ↔ moon, day ↔ night, heaven ↔ earth. Opposites here do not war; they alternate. The moon when it follows her, it does not take her place, it comes after her. The night when it covers her, it veils her, does not delete her. The heaven was built above; the earth was laid out below. A heaven without an earth is no good, and an earth without a heaven is no good.
This alternation echoes in al-Layl, the very next Surah: "by the night when it covers, and by the day when it grows bright" (92:1-2). Then in al-Ḍuḥā: "by the forenoon, and by the night when it stills" (93:1-2). Three consecutive Surahs open on a night, day opposition that does not erase either side. The Qur'an, in this cluster, founds the law of complementarity: the cosmos works by two opposing poles, and the soul too works by waywardness and mindfulness, and uprightness lies in purification, not in canceling one of the poles.
Thamūd at the Surah's close: refusal meets the sun
The Surah opens with the sun and closes with Thamūd: "Thamūd denied through their excess" (91:11). The contrast is deliberate. The sun gives her forenoon to the earth every day, and Thamūd denied. The cosmos performs the act latent in it, and Thamūd refused the taqwā latent in them. The whole cosmos follows the act latent within it; Thamūd alone cut off what was flowing.
This sums up the Surah's law: tazkiya is when the body follows the act latent in it; tadsiya is when it reverses it. The sun purified her forenoon; Thamūd buried their taqwā. So the answer comes in verse nine: "prosperous is he who purifies it, and bereft is he who buries it". The whole cosmos witnesses this law.
